Who is using Shimano road brifters and Shimano MTB derailleur?

I have XX1 cog and derailleur and a friction shifter, between which is a Shiftmate. Works well. They say that the radius of curvature of the pulley is too small so it causes the cable to split. This happened to me once. It did not snap suddenly. I felt the shifting going weird so I had time to get a new cable. You might find this a nuisance if you do loads of miles.

Excuse my ignorance but doesn't a friction shifter mean there are no specific settings? And doesn't that therefore mean you would not need a Shiftmate to adjust the pulling ratio of the shifter to the pulling ratio of the derailleur? Or is it to shorten the throw on the indexing shifter??

I use Shim. Utegra SL ST6703 10 speed shifters(2.3 mm pull per shift), with a Utegra SL FD 6703 front derailleur, and a Shim. 9 speed XT RD-M771-LC rear derailleur (2.3mm pull per shift) 45T capacity, 11-36 10 speed cassette.

I have a Wolf Tooth Tanpan (https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/tanpan) installed that allows the integration of 11sp Integra and XT components. Once dialing it in, it has operated flawlessly.

My friction shifter does not pull enough slack for XX1.

I am using a Shimano XT "rear". I had planned on and had even purchased Dura-Ace Bar end shifters until I discovered what everybody else here knew or also discovered, that road and MTB were not compatible. I saw the Wolf Tooth Tanpan and was going to use that, but then I found MTB compatible bar end shifters:

Bar-end is simple? I wanted a friction shifter. I have a single chainwheel. I got a pair of shifters. The cog one had a lever-throw of about 270 degrees but it was 10sp indexing. The chainwheel one was friction type but the lever-throw was only about 90. So I took them both to bits and combined them. They were both incredibly complicated inside, like watches. Eventually I got a working friction-shifter. Imagine my surprise when I found it still only had enough lever-throw for 10sp. I do not know how I discovered the Shiftmate but I am glad I did.

I use sram mechanical on most of my bents it’s all compatibility with road and mountain but sadly only up to ten speed.
Eg sram red 10 speed brifters with sram xo rear long cage type 2 rear mech vendetta
I can fit an 11-40 ten speed praxis works cassette with a little b screw action. That’s with fsa Klite 53-39 chainset.
Or use twisters grip shift or thumbies. 11-36 and 52-34. Once below 1-1 you’re walking pretty much anyway with a 700 c wheel cruzbike. At least I am.
Eg hurricane brevet gto 700
Unfortunately the 11 speed sram is more difficult and restrictive in its compatibility.
I call it a sales technique with now dedicated gravel groupsets arriving.
Only one pro team ran sram this year.........! Of course shimano shifts are wonderfully smooth and sram especially the double tap seems a tad clunky sadly I can’t afford electronic groupsets.

Once upon a time it was racers, tourers, shoppers and district-nurse. The racers and tourers had Weinmann brakes with downtube friction shifters. They had Sachs Heuret gears with different size cassettes. The shoppers and district-nurses had Sturmey.

So I was asking because Sensah brifters are now available separately in either Shimano or SRAM flavor. They have gotten fairly favorable reviews.

Since I already have a Shimano mountain derailleur, the Shimano flavor made more since. But either flavor needs an adapter, because they are road cable pull. I run 1 by, so the left would be for matching appearance and braking.

Exactly right gears are gears. Gravel groupsets give it a break. Lol. Sram 1 x systems now tie you into a capreo style hub with 10 tooth ring. Gx eagle etc. no thanks.

My quality of life has improved 600% since dropping front mechs some years ago!
I see front mech adjustment especially on non standard rings eg 60 tooth hurricane as a nice challenge.
Only on off camber extreme rough roads might the chain do a runner but never with a type 2 clutched rear mech.
