Go west Chicks! Go west!
After defeating the mighty Alp du Zwift in last week’s TTT, the Cruzbike Chicks were ready to head west to flatter ground. Triple Flat Loops was our destination — to the desert and beyond. The desert was indeed flat. The beyond…not so much. Not mountains exactly, but but definitely not flat. No matter. We’re the Chicks and we climb things. Sort of.Starting lineup — Otto “the man” Walter on deck to be the pullmeister, Ken “back in action” Holzhausen, Connie “I’m following Otto” Swinson, Maria “rehabbing” Parker, and Jim “wish me luck” Parker. We were 3 short, but the Mighty five were undaunted. Pedal we must and pedal we did.
In the pen, all five were suited up and ready to go. Otto had on the correct kit from his view, but not ours. “Don’t change for us Otto! Bad things happen when you get out of the pen shortly before takeoff.” Ask me how I know. Otto complied (thank goodness), and it actually made him easier to spot out front.
After the gate dropped, five energetic but naive Chicks bolted out the gate. “Where’s Jim?” It was Deja vu all over again. “Sorry guys, I’m only showing 39 watts.” Last week at least he was showing 100 watts when he was pedaling at 200+ watts. Wishing him luck did not help with the quarrel Jim’s been having with his trainer. Maybe candy and flowers will do the trick next week.
Sadly disappointed the Chicks carried on. “We’re doing this for our comrade Jim and his not so trusty trainer Mule. Speeds were 40+ kph for the first segment. We were flying, we were drafting, we were communicating, and Otto was pulling like crazy. I asked him after the race if he got a good workout. He assured me he did. Always happy to help out a fellow Zwifter suffer properly. Our blazing speed came to a sudden slowdown as soon as we left the desert. Ken, breathing hard, said, “Gee, I don’t remember it being this hard.” Fortunately, he got his second wind and was the second Chick to cross the finish line. Way to go Ken! Maria planned to drop when the going got too tough. Either it wasn’t that tough or Maria is a pretty gutsy racer. I believe it’s the second option.
After 56 grueling minutes all 4 Chicks made it past the finish line. Our usual goals were met. Finish in under an hour, don’t let any Herd teams pass by us, and don’t die. Sadly no Herd encounters this time. It’s always nice to pass (or be passed) by a friendly fellow racer. Our choice of start time still needs some fine-tuning.
Watch your mail Jim. I’m sending you a horseshoe, a four leaf clover, a rabbit’s foot, and some magic potion guaranteed to work against the Zwift Gremlins. I love being a Chick!
