    Help evaluating "cheaper" donor ideas

Mark's conversion is a beauty, too. (to quote Mark, "pictures?") :D Lots of Trek 220's showing up on Craigslist and the like...

    Help evaluating "cheaper" donor ideas

Hi, Both of these will work fine. The Kawasaki is the same frame as the Honda that some folks have converted. Because it's steel, it'll be heavy. The Tiara works great, whether you leave it as a 24" bike or convert it to 26". This is a Tiara I converted for my son, using a 650c front fork...

    torque values for Silvio construction

The fasteners on the Silvio are generic stainless steel fasteners. In some cases they thread into aluminum. Usually a good rule of thumb is to tighten them with a standard-length allen wrench until they are as tight as you can comfortably get them (e.g. you are not bending the wrench). Bear in...

    Communications Issues

Hello, All, I've been having computer issues that have interfered with tracking the forum over the last few days. My video card took a dump during a windows update and left me with no browser, and then no computer. I thought it was the new backup drive that did it (timing, thy name is irony)...

    Kit on Kestrel??

I agree with these folks - very cool frame but by the time you've fiddled around with things to lower the seat it might not be such a nice frame anymore. Better to find something with a lower top tube, although I know that this is getting harder as time progresses. If you have other bike...

    Rear derailleur shifting issues

"I also suspect the solution of a spacer would create unacceptable axle penetration in the dropout. A longer axle should be used to be safe." - Lev I considered this. The Master, Sheldon Brown, said this: "Axle Length Typical quick-release axles are 11 or 12 mm longer than the spacing of the...

    Rear derailleur shifting issues

Hi Lev, Several folks have had issues with chain/fork clearance (this is most common with Campy parts, but I have just seen my first one on Shimano...) I've been working on a solution and we now have enough mileage on a test bike where it's worth bringing up here. The solution should also fix...

Modifying the reach on the Silvio

Hi Lev, The increased TFT angle will probably interfere with your front derailleur operation. An alternative is to put a stem on the TFT and move the bars forward that way. The TFT-stem is a 30mm tube, which is not too common. One approach it to use a piece of 1 1/8' stiff aluminum tube...

    Bike rack

Hi, I think you'll be fine with either one. The seat is a little wider than a DF seat, but not so much as to interfere with the back window or the other bike. The V1 and V2 are very compatible with anything that works with traditional MTB's - that's one of the great things about the Sofrider...

Headset Assembly - Parts don't match installation photo

Now to answer the actual question... The 10mm silver cap has been deleted from the latest fork design; the split crown spacer rides directly on the fork shoulder ring.

Headset Assembly - Parts don't match installation photo

These are the headset parts as they ship (at least for the frame I have here.) The headset is upside-down in the first picture. The part that looks like a crown race is actually a split spacer that matches the inner race of the lower bearing to the steerer tube shoulder. It's not clear...

    Bigger chainwheel

Re: biger chainwheel Hi Jon, If you're using the original V1 crankset, you'll need to get crank arms and a chain ring because the V1 chainring is riveted to the crank spider. The 48t chainring is very common and I'm surprised it's difficult to find. It is frquently used on "trekking" bikes...

    need help attaching fork

Jeff, The fork must be turned around backwards. The trail dimension will be wrong and the tire won't clear the brake bridge unless it's rotated 180 degrees. If you turn it around backwards I'm confident these problems will disappear. Let me know how you go. Best, Doug

Jus' 'cause you got a machine, don't make you no machinist..

Oh... The discs are 160mm front and rear. I used a Magura 203mm mount on the V1 because it allowed me to reduce the height of the adapter block. The V2 is also 160mm front and rear, but the adapter block is made to the ISO/Universal caliper mounting pattern.

Jus' 'cause you got a machine, don't make you no machinist..

Hi Slim and JBURG, thanks for the kind words. The V2 is a little different, and a little easier. On the V1, the dropout is bent part way up and requires you to relieve the mounting block to account for it (actually, my bike is a prototype; the V1 may not be tweaked like mine was) Also, the V1...

    My Little Cruzer

Most Excellent! The bike seems perfect for her - looks like you could even mount some Origin 8 bars on there. You realize of course your fitness will improve because soon she will be powering away from you... Were you able to get the rear brake adapter to work? Wish I could get my son to ride...

    Thumbies for Silvio

Sorry Gromit, Between business travel and a couple of projects John and Jim have me working on right now, the reborn red bike has slipped to the rear of the que right now. I promise an update as soon as possible. Yes, I hate handlebar taping, but I'm committed to improving.

Ground control to Major Tom …

That it is indeed. And it's particularly important on the Silvio, where you'll be wrapping the cables under the handlebar tape. The inner jacket on brake housing is coiled steel, where derailleur housing uses steel wires that run the length of the housing to keep it from compressing. If you use...
