Starting on hills is really, really hard (and I have thousands of miles on Cruzbikes). A friend of mine once offered to give me a push and that actually really helped. :D

Tire sizes really shouldn't be too noticeable. Different wheel sizes - results might be very bad.

I have dual sided pedals (platform on one side/ spd on other). I figured I'd use the platform sides occasionally. As it turns out, I almost never ride without cleats (the most common occurrence is when I'm tuning my bike.

I've got a 48/38/22 triple on my Sofrider (with a 32 in the back). I use my lowest gear a lot. Training-smaining. I've got big hills and I'm not afraid to use those low gears. I can ride under 3 mph on all of my bikes (including my tandem Cruzbike).

I use SPDs myself. I like being able to walk with cleats.

Andrew is right (and this shows up in DF time trial bikes as well). Finding a more aero position that produces less power doesn't always win. And what works for one person may not work for another. So there can be a fair bit of experimentation needed here.

Especially on my Cruzbike Tandem I get all sorts of gasps and exclamations. :D

On two of my bikes, I have Shimano trigger shifters for the front and rear derailleurs. They work well for the rear derailleur and horribly for the front. I've bought (but not yet put on) friction shifters for the front derailleurs that are very similar.

Handling question is a little difficult in that the bike that has the Tannus tires has only ever had the Tannus tires. And the bike is the shortest wheelbase of any of my Cruzbikes. But I don't think the tires affect the handling. I have ridden in the rain and had no issues. My tires...

Larry, did you have V1 or V2 tires? V2 are supposed to roll better (I've got V1).

I completely agree with you. At first, I think it is very helpful to not be clipped in as taking your feet off of the pedals makes the bike feel much more "normal" to novices. After getting experience, being clipped in makes riding a Cruzbike (in my opinion) much easier.

I used 123mm with my triples. (118 might work, but whatever came default on Sofrider didn't.)
