    2016 Calvin's Challenge - who's going??

I was watching facebook today while I did housework - it wasn't NEARLY as much fun as this recap! Thanks @ratz and @BentAero for all the great info! In retrospect - I'm glad I wasn't aware this was going on because I would have been useless around the house. OH MAN! my adrenaline is pumping now...

    2016 Calvin's Challenge - who's going??

JoeBat - been there done that! but in my case it wasn't raining I was just physically whipped. Keep up on your nutrition and you'll be good. @LarryOz, @JOSEPHWEISSERT, Kevin, Ben - ride safe, ride smart, ride well. Good luck and enjoy. @BentAero, Andrew T., and Wives, Partners, Parents, etc and...

    2016 Calvin's Challenge - who's going??

Crud! I gotta pay attention when i'm getting called out! I'll take the pass granted by Ratz but point out that whoever made the rule #95 addendum isn't a purist; a true #5. Lifting your bike over your head onto a roof rack?! Meh! A true #5 Velominati wouldn't *drive* their whip to the start -...

    Minneapolis Silvio

I'm a little late to the welcome party but Welcome nevertheless Hoyden. Your route to recumbent and indeed Cruzbike, while different in some details, is a good facsimile of many of ours. The resource of The Cruzbike Tribe is worth Ratz' previous weight in gold. Welcome.

    Advanced Figure 8's

Yes - that's the one. At the time I couldn't grok it. In this context it makes more sense. Thanks. I buried my hyper-rotating chainwheel into the bumper of 200x Camry at about 18mph. A) thank goodness the driver didn't want to exchange info; it would have cost me. B) The dog, in the same...

    Advanced Figure 8's

Is that what an outdoor hockey-rink looks like then? Never seen one. I'd be curious to hear more about what you are doing with your body/hips and arms on these turns? One of your early conversations on turning talked about counter-steering, like motorcycle turns. And RojoRacing (Jason) has had...

    New and Improved Headrest Clamp

Wow - I need to stay on top of things so I don't miss out. @RojoRacing : I'll PM you my info if I can get on the list for batch #n @Robert O - are you interested in one of these as well? I'll order two and have them shipped to our hill - then maybe we'll be FORCED to get together for a ride. :)

    Flipped by a Vendetta

    A) glad you are ok B) The physics of your crash seem unusual and hard to visualize but that's ok C) I can't think of a case (other than practice/playing) where you would really want to turn riding one-handed anyway. I suppose it happens? maybe that's a good reason to familiarize yourself with...

    All sorts

David! You hit me with a double whammy this time! Vendetta + sugar reduction. On advice of my naturopath several ears ago I drastically reduced my intake of simple sugars and simple carbohydrates and yes - life changer. Several years ago I drastically reduced my intake and my life changes...

    Exceptional Ride Leader

So there I am thumbing through the Cascade Courier, the monthly publication sent to members of the largest bicycle advocacy group in the USA. With pictures of STP's past and other rides I usually look for a recumbent. I'm on page 5 when I uncharacteristically say out loud "Ya know, would it...

Something (really stupid) happened on the way to the Park

Larry, you never cease to amaze me. The magnitude of your successes are, in my opinion, directly correlated with the magnitude of your failures PLUS the applied learning from those failures. Further, and critically, it's not just about the act of failing, it's about owning the lesson-learned and...

UMCA Century Road Record Attempt - Oct 11, 2015

From the horses mouth - over on FB. Larry Said: I finished in official time of 3:59:31. Constant 13-15mph winds did slow me down some. I am wiped.

UMCA Century Road Record Attempt - Oct 11, 2015

Yeah! Crazy. 8:35AM alright - well the glympse invite expires in about 5 min. I think the default is 4hrs. Larry is just about to complete a 32.2 mile lap since I marked it at 7:22 - I'll do the math on that lap when he completes. Then I'll be blind but with a much better estimate of avg speed...

UMCA Century Road Record Attempt - Oct 11, 2015

Okay 7:22 at the turn, came into it at 26mph, and left the turn at 27mph...time for some math. 64.4mi / 2.3666h = 27.21avg 100mi / 27.21mph = 3.68hrs That's really fast AND subject to some factors, like actual start location, actual start time, and the lag in the Glympse - any of which could...

UMCA Century Road Record Attempt - Oct 11, 2015

Ok - so I'm doing some math here - never good for me but especially so at 7AM on 5 hrs sleep. "If I'm wrong...and I'm never wrong..." (The Princess Bride) I'm guessing he started at 5AM pacific time based on the timing of my invite to his Glympse (4:43 am) I missed the start but I can see the...

The Road to 500 miles in 24hrs

Your racing experience showed right there. Good advice to anyone digging in and getting serious about their choice of event - practice enough to know your limits. Push yourself to achieve but remember you are human and save yourself for the next time.
