Belt drive on a thru-axle Cruzbike

Bret, have you heard of waxing your bicycle chain? Ordinary wax, used for canning or making candles, is cheap, repels dirt, and keeps your chain cleaner for longer. Initially it may be a little work to remove the original grease that a new chain is packed in, as explained elsewhere on this...

    Vosadrian's V20 Journey - Australia

I started waxing my chains about three months ago. I spend a little more time now on chain maintenance than I used to, but I spend much less time trying to keep the rest of the bike clean. So far, so good.

Waxing how long does it last.

@jond This may belong in the banter container: I prefer Esau (a hairy man) on my Cruzbike legs but Jacob (thoroughly waxed) on the chain.

Waxing how long does it last.

Well there you go @billyk maybe it’s time to try. the most important part of waxing is to scrupulously clean the chain. any hint of contamination and wax fails to adhere. It’s literally start all over. I’m hoping to inspire waxing and cruzbike riding. ;)

    Vosadrian's V20 Journey - Australia

Because the chain is up front and raised up out of the muck it stays pretty clean. Even for an oily chain. Expect double the life. by waxing it just improves life again a lot and stays clean clean clean.

Waxing how long does it last.

I've been reading these waxing threads for years now and would really like to be done with nasty greasy chains ... cassette ... derailleur. But my problem is that I'm a year-round commuter in Seattle. Even with my fairing the chain often gets wet. I'd like to hear from someone in a similar...

Waxing how long does it last.

This is great. As I suspected I could leave the chain on longer between waxing . getting the chain clean and free of oem oil lube is key. So that the wax can adhere. I see ozcycle now has refined his cleaning method. Petrol then degreaser then metho. he also now has a portable liquid version...

Waxing how long does it last.

250-300 miles. Can be much less in wet weather. I will touch them up with Squirt of Smoove once. Then, I throw it into the MSW crockpot maybe at 400-500. I do not clean unless the chain is dirty. More frequent waxing means the chain does not get crap into the pins. I bring a small...

Waxing how long does it last.

I use Molten’s wax but don’t know if it’s any better than home brew. I have three chains that I swap out (by schedule) after about 500-600 miles, maybe sooner if I got caught in the rain. As for cleaning a new chain, I find the double mineral bath followed by ethanol baths to be effective...

Waxing how long does it last.

Hi tribe. I wax all my chains using a homebrew set up. Paraffin wax and paraffin oil or paraffin wax and ptfe powder . I’ve got a few crockpots on the go. I get around three to four hundred kilometres on df before I care to rewax. around 600 on cruzbike and a 1000 on long chain bikes trike...

    Getting Off the Fence

So all you folks who extol the virtues of chain waxing are right. After my first time chain waxing, it is quieter and has smoother shifts. Now, the big question for me is, will this stop the metal specs that have been gathering on my bottom bracket, chain stay, and crank arms? As soon as I...

Yes, that is a huge contributing factor. As far as waxing goes, I wonder how long wax actually stays on the metal surfaces. I worked on sport fishing boats for quite a while and used various waxes, protectants and cleaners on fiberglass, stainless and aluminum, and we had our own timeline for...

Well written and I agree. Keeping dirt and stuff out of the important parts is key to longevity. I think wax does it even better than any lube as well.

CHAIN LONGEVITY I am convinced that the absolute most important single factor in chain longevity is this: CLEAN. Chain wear has one cause - FRICTION. That’s right, the same enemy that we try to steal watts from every day. Chain parts diagram...

Sure thing braddah. I am in Tokyo, and I ride that bike (now the V20 as well) along the Arakawa river for about 85-90% of my total mileage. Tokyo is humid in Summer, and it rains a lot from the beginning of June through the middle of July usually. However, I very rarely ride in the rain unless I...

...kind of life out of with such minimal care? I'm definitely switching brands! BTW, no crockpot is required for waxing, though some folks find that convenient. I've been waxing chains for 25 years using just a small pot (maybe 700ml) purchased at a garage sale for a dollar or two. Cheers, -Jack

I was trying to avoid buying another chain because I easily get about 20,000km out of one before it needs replacing, and I while I know that waxing is better in many ways than other options I don't have the space or want to buy all the extra stuff. I just spray on WD40 and wipe it off every...

I recommend getting extra chains and having one to get your extra links from. I have three chains that I rotate through. Waxing, of course.

I vote for plain paraffin. I clean the chain several times in an ultrasonic hot soapy bath, rinse, bake out at 170 degF, and leave in a small crock pot overnight in wax. I reapply when I start hearing the slightest mechanical sounds or squeaks from the chain which is running about 2000 miles or...
