    Another virgin ride

My pulse is pounding and my legs are like jelly - and that was just the first 400 yards! I can confirm that the bike can be ridden* by a 66 year old Cruzbike virgin after a couple of minutes, if my wobbly progress can be called riding. First I sat on it and rolled down a 1% slope - about 50...

Schlumpf on a Freerider or Softrider

I realise there's a little weight penalty and a fairly big cost, but to get a wide gear range from any Cruzbike that doesn't have a derailleur post you have the option of the Schlumpf bottom bracket drives. The heel kick change is very light and shouldn't present an insurmountable problem in...

    Softriders - Seat top bag

I note a lot of owners are mentioning that there's no where to hang/bolt/store 'stuff.' For a long time I've used a seat top bags on 3 recumbents - the bags will pretty much fit any seat. For hydration I have a tube and nipple. I've drilled a PET cap for the hose and the bottle of whatever...

    How Low Can you Go?

Re: How Low Can you Go? Camera hijack! Long! My first career was as a photo technician/photographer. I resisted digital photography as the Devils Spawn for many years until I more or less accidentally used a 4 MP Nikon Coolpix. Now I'm a convert - I've got a Nikon D60 DSLR and a Panasonic...

    Stealing a Cruzbike

Re: Stealing a Cruzbike - 14 y.o. rides it easily Your point about the Cruzbikes being rideable straight off is now confirmed locally! I showed the 14 y.o. neighbours son the Softrider and invited him to ride it. He got on and rode off basically without a wobble. Then I got out my Orca and we...

    Softrider - fork not 'suspended'

Fork OK now it's raining for a week! EVERY time I buy a new bike it rains for a week and it's true to form this time! We've had two inches of steady rain over the last 24 hours with more to come. It appears that the reason the fork is so stiff ON the bike is that the front triangulated frame...

    Softrider - fork not 'suspended'

Re: Softrider - fork - all is well - fork in good health Thanks for that - did what you suggested and it started sliding up and down smoooothly. Now my body weight easily operates it and I am haaaappy 'cos I like to know that the mechanicals are doing what they're supposed to. Of course now I...

    Stealing a Cruzbike

I believe you, but I can't imagine that! The normal way to get a recumbent going is a sharp push on one pedal. With a Cruzbike this results in a U turn at best and the casualty department at worst! I'd really like to know the 'secret' of keeping it straight while pushing the steering sideways...

    Softrider - fork not 'suspended'

Thanks Doug. The cover is indeed right in the ball park at 1.25 inches. Stiff ain't the word for it - putting my full weight on the bars has zero effect and that's 176 lbs straight down. I would have expected it to flinch or something! Is it possible to mess up something in assembly? The long...

    Softrider - fork not 'suspended'

Thanks Marc - how come you don't get a holiday then! I'm not at all familiar with suspended forks. I can't see any sign of a spring on this one, but if it's like the Cannondale it may be internal. I've sat the bike upside down and put my full weight on the front wheel and I've tried thumping...

    Softrider - fork not 'suspended'

I've just purchased a Softrider and assembled it. The front fork is solid (doesn't spring) and I can't see what, if anything, I should have done differently. Any clues?

    Stealing a Cruzbike

Has anyone had a Cruzbike stolen by someone hopping on and riding off? I imagine that would be very unlikely and another plus for the design! There's something comforting about having a bike that only you can ride! I'm awaiting the delivery of my Softrider with excitement and trepidation!

Sofrider-Best bike at Burning Man 2008

I enjoyed your comments about the Softrider over rough ground. I've just ordered one (Note the date 2 December!) and look forward to riding it over some rail trails. I agree with mark that a pressure washer shouldn't be directed at bearings. If you look at the mechanics on Le Tour de France...

    Seat Pan

Re: Seat Pan - Cushion Scotchguard it Depending on the cover material, Scotchguard will help repel dirt. I like the idea of the FRP seat pan - a straightfoward solution than can only be improved by using that black carbon stuff! Duglet on the Mazda Forum says this about Scotchguard: ..snip...

    Why soft tail for conversion?

I'm curious why a soft tail is recommended for the conversion kit. Is it because the seat height will be more correct? I can't find any suitable donor bikes locally (soft tail.) I can buy an El Cheapo alloy framed soft tail from EBay or a Cell bike like this...
