2018 Mid-Atlantic 12/24

The Mid-Atlantic has several events, each one is a different experience. This is a great Cruzbike event and we’re hoping to see many come out this year.

August 18-19 2018
http://www.midatlanticultrasports.com/#2850

The format of the event is a 26 mile loop where you go back to your car at the High School to restock.

1) 100 mile race - this is a full on race which Jim Parker and Larry Oslund have been hitting hard the last few years

2) 100 mile non-competitive ride - its a nice rural flat course

3) 12-hour race - good hard event where you don’t need night time gear

3) 24-hour solo race - RAMM qualifier if you can get over 400 miles

4) 24-hour 2-person relay teams

I did the 12-hour last year and set a new personal record. You have to be pushing yourself the full time, every minute off the bike hurts your distance. It was a good, hard experience.

This year I talked Maria Parker into doing the 2-person 24-hour relay with me by promising her she wouldn’t have to train. So record setting Maria won’t be at the Mid-Atlantic this year, but fun Maria will be. I like the relay format because you have time to recover and socialize while your teammate is riding the loop. By teaming with Maria, I’ll never see her, but you all will if you can make it to the event this year. We are hoping to see a lot of Cruzbikes show up.

Last time I did the 2-person 24-hour relay was on my DF. Ouch!!! I’m very glad I’m now enlightened. But I’ve also talk several DF friends to come out. The more the merrier. Hope to see a lot of folks pushing themselves to set a new PR in August.

Very cool Doug!
Yes, hoping Jim & I can tear it up and get a sub-4 hour again. Might be harder for me this year, as I am only training for 1 HR TT's so these Century's are harder then they have been in the past when I would ride one each weekend.
What a catch - Maria as a partner for 24-hour relay - not sure, but I would be just "a little" over-whelmed riding with "Maria" in a relay. She might not train, but you bet I would - would not want to be the weak link. Haha :D:D:D
See you there!

Yep, I have no doubt Maria can out run me without training :) But she is looking for a more fun event this year hoping the CB tribe of all levels shows up.

Since the Mid-Atlantic is a RAMM qualifying event, I'm going to comment on the 2018 RAMM here. It looks like Seana Hogan (who's been an incredible rider for a long time) broke her previous 50+ RAMM record by about 4 hours (unofficially). If my calculations are correct it looks like her speed was 10.3mph and Maria is still the fastest at 10.4mph.

The point I'd like to make about the Mid-Atlantic is...
yes it's a RAMM qualifying event
yes there will be folks there doing incredible things
yes there is always someone faster than you
and yes you hear a lot of emphasis on record setting in this forum.

Don't be intimidated by that. You just need to compete against yourself and try to set a new personal record. I'd love to see a lot of Cruzbikes show up and have a PR podium photo, no matter what that PR is. If you're within travel distance of the Mid-Atlantic, put this one on your calendar.

Planning to be there this year again as well. Last year was my first endurance race and I will say, its a great, flat course and very well managed. Lots of support for newbies and a good place to try for your first longer effort.

Does anyone know? (I am on the fence to enter, not very fit due to lingering health issues). Thank you.

1. The 100 mile bent rider results in years past have asterisks next to their names but the 12 hour bent riders do not. I assume both the 100 and 12 hour are mass starts (bents and uprights mixed in and they race together).
2. Are the left turns onto route 32 marshalled?

They let the 12 & 24 hour racers off at 7am, and then let the Century racers out at 7:30.
Yes - Last year there was a detour that caused 2 left turns onto 32. They were both marshalled.
This year they will probably be back to the original route, but I am sure they will still marshall the left onto 32.
It is a great course, you will not regret making the trip. It is flat as a pancake, so if you are a little unfit there are no climbs to kill you! :)
I rode my first 12-hour on it 4 years ago on a Silvo and have been back every year since!
If you are on the fence, I am pretty sure they let you register the evening before the race.
Hope to see you there. Should be lots of Cruzbike tribe members.

Last year the left turns were police marshalled only until the 100 mile race concluded. 12 and 24 are on their own after that. More than general fitness be well prepared for weather. If hot as last year you want to be loaded up on fluids!! Hope to see you there. A gang is forming to target 200 miles in 12.

Thanks for the clarification Jeffrey. I totally forgot no marshaling after Century is over.

Thanks, Doug for starting this thread. I promised myself no racing this year, but when Doug invited me to partner with him, I could not resist. I plan on showing up and having as much fun as possible. It would be a lot more fun if I see many Cruzbike Tribe members there and my other friends still riding traditional bikes. Come on out friends!

My wife is going to try for her first 200 miler. It will likely take her more than 12 hours. The race organizer said if 200 is your goal, sign up for the 12 hour drafting and then keep going after 12 hours as long as you have the necessary lights and reflectors. This is kind of a back door 200 mile non-competitive event. So keep in mind you don't necessary want to stop at 7pm if you haven't met your distance goal.

Sorry no picture yet. I am looking forward to riding the 100 mile race. It has been a long time since I was in a pace line and perhaps there will be some of that before I get blown off the back. Extremely curious what the draft off a V20 feels like. I have spent the last three months chasing DF groups at a distance. Only finished my first 100 on the V20 this last weekend, so a bit green still. Looking forward to meeting all the Cruzbike gang and riding some different terrain than the Houston area, although it is nice out in the rural areas here.

North Carolina looks like a perfect place to ride bikes. My wife, Cathy, and I will be headed in that direction by car starting the week before, then swing back to Texas for the Hotter n Hell 100 on the following weekend in Wichita Falls. Doing a chill-out two-week drive vacation. Took some measurements and should be able to fit the V20 in a Toyota RAV4 without any disassembly. We will see. See you there.

Hi all. Did a training ride yesterday out on the course. All of the roads were in good shape and no surprises (like no chip n seal, etc.) I did not ride on 264 but took this slightly longer route with virtually no traffic. Bill, welcome up North. Several of us can also make good restaurant reservations, etc. if you wish. See everyone soon.

Hi Bill, looking forward to meeting you. I’ll post some tips type info about the Mid-Atlantic when I get back near WiFi. I have the info collected in a PDF file, but that won’t post here easily.

It doesn't look like any recumbents signed up when I looked at BikeReg. Do they allow in person registration on Friday. I was thinking of doing the 12H or the 100 miler, depending on the field. I probably have a better chance on 12h but might be able to hold on for a lap or two with the fast kids in the 100 miler.

Yes, they allow registration in person on Friday - (that is what I always do) - and just checked with Alvin - even on Saturday morning.
See you all there!
