Here's a better way to adjust the Quest's Avid BB5 disk brakes. The whole story (with photos) is at:
http://www.ecovelo.info/2011/04/15/a-foolproof-method-for-adjusting-avid-bb5-disc-brakes/
but the method is simple and fast:
1. Loosen the caliper mounting bolts until it moves freely; also loosen the red inboard adjustment knob.
2. Insert a business card between the rotor and the OUTBOARD brake pad
3. Tighten the red adjustment knob until it tightly grips the card.
4. Tighten the caliper bolts (in successive steps to avoid disturbing the adjustment).
5. Loosen the red knob a few clicks until you can remove the card, then retighten until it almost touches the rotor.
6. Use the adjustment screws on the cable by the hand lever for final tweaking.
This is better than the manual's method, which will align the caliper, but does not deal with the relative positions of the inboard and outboard pads. This method properly sets the inboard pad, and then you can make final adjustments (if needed) with the cable screws at the hand lever.
