Balancing

I have thought of buying a trike since I have never felt really comfortable on a upright bike. I have balance issues. I have nothing neurologically wrong but I have never had the best balance even though I keep in good shape and workout all the time. I have been told that recumbent bikes are more difficult to balance. I thought that I might be able to ride a recumbent. I have been told that a long based recumbent might be better but I love the reviews and looks of the cruzbike. Help!

Have you tried riding a recumbent? Be careful not to put too much into what people say. Everyone has an opinion, experience, emotion, etc. that doesn't necessarily mean it applies to you! I went to a bike shop 3 hous from where I live to see and ride a recumbent. The owner liked to ride a certain bike and he tried hard to sell me one. Eventhough I have not ridden a Cruzebike yet that's what I think makes the most sense. I know I am going to have to start over and re-learn how to balance and ride a bike, but that doesn't have to paralize me with fear unless I let it. I just plan to forge ahead with the end goal in mind--go fast in comfort. Wish you the best.

Balance Issues?

You say you're not comfortable on an upright bike.

What is not clear is how well you can balance an upright bike.

If you have problems balancing on an upright bike,
-which is a single track (two wheels) vehicle-
then you will most likely have problems balancing on a recumbent bike
-which is also a single track vehicle.

At any rate, you won't know how well you'll do on a recumbent
bicycle unless you try one.

Good luck!

P.S.:

Nothing wrong with a trike!

Welcome alaw35. I have been riding recumbents for about 12 years and I believe they aren't any more difficult to balance than a regular bike providing it is designed well. I ride a Silvio now and when I first tried to ride it I had a, well, the learning curve was steep. Now I ride and I don't think about it. I have a problem at really low speeds, particularly if I have to negotiate around things. I just walk it now if that is the case. My wife has also been riding recumbents for about 12 years and has just started riding a trike. She likes the way she can still balance (or balancing isn't necessary) at very low speeds. Going up a steep hill in particular is more enjoyable for her on the trike. She absolutely loves her trike! I (on the other hand) don't like the fact that a trike slows me down. Everything has trade-offs. You just have to decide which factor is the most important to you. Good luck. Keith
