Last Saturday, I participated in the Dairyland Dare 200K Gran Fondo in Dodgeville, WI. Being the only recumbent rider there on my Cruzbike V20C, it was quite an experience! This event is no joke with 8,500 feet of climbing and steep hills, albeit short.
While gearing up, one rider stopped, looked at my Cruzbike, and exclaimed, "That is the coolest recumbent I have ever seen!" I had to agree. Throughout the race, I received numerous comments on the bike's speed. People were either trying to keep up or marveling as I passed them. One rider noted, "Your bike is so fast on flats, into the wind, and downhill. I usually coast downhill without being overtaken on my TT bike, but you flew past me effortlessly." Another rider mentioned, "My triathlete friend's TT bike couldn't keep up with yours."
After the event, during the buffet, someone called out to me, "Hey you! Come here!" He recognized me from the course and remarked, "You were really flying on that thing!" Another added, "It is smart to have a bike like that, real smart." I received many compliments on the bike's smart design and performance.
At one point during the event, I passed a rider who caught up with me on the next climb to chat about the Cruzbike. He tried drafting behind me for a while, but after a downhill stretch, I lost him for good.
I’ve included a short video showcasing the bike's speed, passing others on climbs, descents, and twisty roads. I love this bike and all the attention it gets for its uniqueness.
If you’re in the Midwest, I highly recommend the Dairyland Dare. It's well-organized, well-marked, and well-attended, with food and beer afterwards. Check out the event here: Dairyland Dare and my Strava activity: Strava Ride.
Happy riding!
