Zen MBB Master
first off, not a highly competetive race but we did kick things off with a pace of about 25mph so there was some hope of a good, hard ride.
Big James on his new V20 (after upgrading from a Q after car, Bike and rack were rear ended on a drive to FL) put in a nice ride to finish first. Couldn’t keep up w him on my S40 but rode w an unorganized 4some of relatively strong DF young punks who had legs but no idea how to work together.
Great 50 mile course w excellent surface. Supposed to be 1600’ of climb but half way through I was questioning my fitness. Turns out it was 2800’ of climb. Most of it was steep rollers and unrelenting they were. I bet there aren’t more than 4 or 5 flat sections more than 1/4 mile long. Lots of false flats.
We passed the half way point w the group intact at about 22.5mph average. Dropped 2 by mile 30 and that left 3 of us behind James. The last 15 miles while still rolling in the hills is generally uphill overall and I was toast at about mile 45 and limped home w the other 2 still in sight.
Overall a very good ride, the last 5 miles not withstanding, even I ncluding the extra 2 miles due to a missed arrow. Construction arrows painted on the road, same color as the route arrows . . .
Tons of interest in the CBs. Several test rides in the parking lot. One comment from the crowd going through the last town, “those crazy ass bikes are crazy fast.” Another from one of the young DF punks, “dude, I thought recumbents suck. You two rock.” Score two points for the old guys on the CBs.
