Last night, Low Drag faced off against High Speed in the WTRL Team Time Trials. Las Vegas had billed this virtual race as a toss-up, and it lived up to the hype on the 32-kilometer Zwift Scotland Rolling Hills course. Starting with an eight-minute head start, Low Drag’s lead eroded fast. High Speed caught the Draggers 24 kilometers into the race, setting them up for their patented power pass, wave goodbye, and victory dance.

Hardy of Low Drag admitted, “When I saw them this early in the rearview mirror, I knew we were in trouble.” High Speed’s formation was a masterclass in precision. Ottotrocious led the charge with a confident grin, cruising at a blistering 40 kph—probably grinning because he remembered to lock his trainer down this time. Behind him were John, Jeremy, and two of Low Drag’s primary targets: Connie and Rick. High Speed cleverly employed a tactical move, keeping Captain Falcon and Larry at the back as decoys.

But, hold on, Low Drag was executing their plan too. Their newest rider, Bobby S., had set multiple personal records providing group saving energy before tapering off. Hardy, Jim Mc, and Gung Ho Greg were preparing for their final effort, setting the stage for their Gazelles: Paul, The Hawk (Low Drag’s own avian ace), and Ken H. The goal was simple—they ride the wheels of High Speed’s mid-pack riders until the sprint, then launch a crushing victory burst. Thankfully, Low Drag didn’t need to beat the entirety of High Speed—the rules require just one of their racers to finish ahead of any High Speed rider. One! Thats it.

However, targeting the right riders was easier said than done. Captain Falcon and Larry’s decoy strategy complicated matters. Hardy recalls the chaos: “The radios were hot. 'Larry and the Falcon are on the back. Don’t get on their wheels. Your targets are at positions three and four. Oh, there goes Larry! Don’t chase him—find your target. That’s it, now hold on!'" If you’ve ever Team Time-Trialed, you know it is hard to find specific wheels when two teams are intertwined. Don't believe me, try a TTT and see for yourself.

Despite a hard-punching High-Speed attack, Jim, Greg, and Hardy succeeded in positioning their Gazelles. With one final burst to disrupt High Speed’s line, the three riders were done, imploding like stormtroopers battling a Jedi. The fate of Low Drag now rested in the hands of their sprinters, Paul, Hawk, and Ken . With 8 kilometers to go, the effort had to be Herculean. High Speed, clearly annoyed that Low Drag’s chaos tactics were working, unleashed several ferocious attacks, setting numerous personal records in the process.

In the final sprint, Low Drag’s perseverance paid off. Hawk and Ken delivered the win with Paul closely behind, crossing the line with a three second win. Vegas was right—this toss-up came down to the wire. However, the narrow victory will come at a cost. Low Drag’s head start will shrink by a minute next week, and likely, the race organizers will implement a rule change or two.
