The WTRL Team Time Trial season reached its thrilling conclusion Thursday night with the most demanding challenge of the year: the legendary Road to the Sky. This route showcases every grueling inch of the 3,428-foot ascent of Alpe du Zwift, a virtual homage to the iconic Alpe d’Huez. It’s the ultimate test of endurance and teamwork, attracting only the most dedicated riders.

This year, 1,539 racers formed into 294 teams to tackle the climb, and among them were six stellar members of the High-Speed virtual racing team—a shining example of the “yes, recumbents can climb” mantra.

Leading the charge was Ottorocious Otto Walter, the captain of this hardcore crew, supported by an elite lineup:

  • Lift-Off Laura Crawford
  • Climbing Connie Swinson
  • Jumping Johnnie Crawford
  • High Rizer Holtzhausen (Ken)
  • Mountain Mike Sarten
Fueled by the desire to excel, this band of gravity defiers attacked every one of the 21 hairpin turns, screaming past Turn 7—the iconic Dutch Corner—with power to spare. By the time they crested the summit, they had clocked record-breaking times, proving once again that determination and teamwork trump any terrain.

But the challenge wasn’t over. No time to rest, the mighty six hit the descent. Some switched to faster downhill TT bikes while others stuck with the trusted machines that carried them up the climb. The result? Ten minutes of breathtaking, high-speed descending that set even more records.

With the season complete, the High-Speed team closed with the team flag held high, showing an unrelenting drive for excellence. Ready for the challenges of the next year, this amazing crew remains a testament to the unstoppable spirit of recumbent racing. Well done High Speed.
