Dirty Kanza 2019

Happy New Year Tribe! I just registered for the 100 mile Dirty Kanza ride. It is a gravel grinder held in the Kansas Flint Hill region during the first week in June. Since the demand is so high, they have a lottery for the entry. I will know by January 19 if I will be in or not. Is anyone else trying it? I have the stock S40. Any recommendations on modifications to make it through sharp rocks, mud holes, and large gravel with maybe 5,000 feet of climbing? The race is actually 200 miles but I am not ready for that. Thanks! Just sitting here thinking about it. May pull the trigger on the K100 myself if I can get my wife to act as roving SAG. As for recs for gear . . . Lots of tubes or sealant and a couple of extra tires. Add a few Kevlar tire boots - I use cut up USPS fiber envelopes. The flint rock is brutal on rubber. Panracer Gravel Kings have served me well on that kind of rock. Other than that, lots of gravel miles including climbing between now and then. Hope you get a slot!

I registered for the 100. Was going to try 200 but I have a few health issues so 100 should be challenge enough. I will not be doing it on the Cruzbike Silvio. I’ve been on a few loose gravel roads with it. I’d prefer the CX or MTB for the DK 100.

No go on the DK lottery. Got the bad news last night. There’s a msg board where you’re supposed to be able to post requests for those with a slot who end up not being able to make it unfortunately it says “comments closed”.

Anybody else have any luck?

I got into the 100. My friend is doing the 200 again. I’ll be riding a Specialized Crux CX bike. I’m not sure it’s doable on a recumbent. I’ve seen pictures of ankle deep mud and golf ball sized gravel.

I got in! I would like to try it on my S40 but did keep my Scott Hardtail 29r. I know I’ll have to walk the CB up some of the hills and mud. I will probably use 650b wheels. I’ll have to experiment/train with the S40 on gravel.

Yes...I’ve seen the same pictures/videos. The DK200 was done on a Bachetta

Good luck. Tear it up with that S40. Will be interested to hear how it goes. Guess a lot depends on road condition. Get yourself a nice wide strip of frame protector tape for the low part of the frame, behind the front wheel. them stones is nasty!

I believe consensus is 40c tires are the way to go, for DFs. How big a tire can you fit? You may want to look into a dual layer seat pad from Hostel Shoppe. DF riders can get off the saddle, you can't. Tubeless, sealant, low pressure. Get good at picking a line through sharp rocks. When in doubt on a climb, instead of risking a crash, or flatting, walk.

Tire choice is critical. There are some very slow and some reasonably fast gravel tires, but no third party test data that I am aware of. The less tread you can get away with the better. If its muddy, you need serious tread. You almost want to get there with 2 sets of wheels and choose at the last minute. What I would do is read up on the various forum posts about DK and tires. Beware Compass Pass tires: reasonably fast, but very fragile. Schwalbe G-Ones might hold up.

Before the interest of a certain ProTour team, I would have said that a bent could win DK looking at John Schlitters performance. He started from the back of the pack.

My hands down choice is Panracer Gravelking SK tubeless 38. Minimal tread so not a mud tire but I hear they now offer a version with more aggressive tread for softer conditions. Absolute best balance of performance and durability. Gravel Cyclist site gives these a pretty thorough review. They recently ran an online survey and it seems the GK is a favorite of most. Personally I prefer a 32-35 width on gravel but my local gravel is not as nasty as them flint hills.

Knowing that Panaracer is not known for fast road tires, and that they also make the Compass tires, I did another search for actual test data on gravel tires. And I found some!

It could be better, but at least they took some data across 10 different models. Panaracer SK did pretty well. Keep in mind that tread choice varies with locale, and preference. But, tread = drag, so you only need as much as you need, more is only slower all else being equal.

Other notes:
* Damping is hysteresis. It may feel good, but it is slow. What feels fast is not always what is fast.
* 30 years ago my friends and I picked MTB tires by which one gave the most grip on the tightest DH turns, and the steepest rutted climbs. The tires that let us keep traction the best, and let us stay on our bikes the longest were the best! Panaracer Smokes and Darts were popular. WTB Velociraptors were even better!! ...and as it turns out, even slower. Looking back we were picking tires to perform best on 2% of our ride terrain. We were taking a big hit in rolling resistance everywhere else (98%). We were picking good downhill tires, not good cross country tires.
* I am coaching a rider who is doing a long race that is about 30% gravel. After surveying the gravel sectors (grade, turns, texture), we are leaning towards a fast slick tubeless 30c-32c road racing tire, and airing down as needed.

Why can't I post links? Google

It can’t be that you’re too new here, must be due to the number of posts or some other algorithm. Until you get posting privileges try doing this:
