The point of attachment really doesn't affect the steering geometry. No matter where the bars attach, the geometry is effectively the same if the relationship between the grip position and the steerer tube (steering axis) on the fork are no different.
The Freerider has a wider grip span, and this can make riding early on a little easier, since it increases leverage and decreases the angular speed of motion, e.g. the grips (thus your hands) have to move farther to produce the same change in steering angle.
You could try a wider bar, but my advice would be to get some more miles in before making a modification.
Of course, I change my bikes all the time...
