Full Fenders for Commuting

This topic has come up several times and I'm having minor frustrations with mounting full fenders on my QX100.

I didn't want to thread jack so @billyk Can you post your experience and how to for mounting full fenders on the Q chassis? It looks like the fender attachment points have been moved. How did you do that and how successful is it for stabilizing the fenders?

I also thought I would collect the full fender info in one place: here.

Quest 2/559, upgraded to (approximately) QX100..'m selling it because I got a Q45...

- Fenders (funky mounts, but I like a full front fender on these bikes to keep my drivetrain cleaner in the rain)

I'm on the road (again, unfortunately not with bike) but I since have a better solution: two rear (i.e. full) rear DF fenders. That's what's on the Q I'm selling, and I've put similar on the Q45.

The front requires some kluge for the front mount for the front, and the Q45 for the front mount in the rear.

I'll post details/photos when I get home.

I'm 3/4 of the way through fender mounting on my Q45. If anyone else is trying to do it, I would recommend buying two rear fenders, rather than a front/rear set. The front needs to be long enough to provide coverage for both yourself and the drive train. Most fenders I looked at were intended for really wide or really narrow tires. I was at the 4th local bike shop before I found some that would cover a 42mm tire properly, but not be too wide to squeeze between the fork legs.

On the rear, I found creating a front mounting point difficult. There are two lugs on the swing arm top, but it's difficult to create a bracket that doesn't rub on the rear brake cable. I ended up wrapping two adel clamps around the lower shock mount, then a cross bar between them and spacer so that the fender wouldn't be too far from the tire. The mid and rear stays just went to the tapped hole at the end of the swing arm, just like a DF.

At this point, I've mounted a regular front fender to the fork crown, with stays to the inboard side of the lugs on the lower fork. Using the inboard side of the lugs keeps the stays from rubbing on the rear derauler cable. I'm cutting down another used (I'll paint it flat black) fender, to add to the front end of it and extend below the BB. I've fabricated a bracket to attach it to the inboard end of the front derauler cable pully lug.
