Larry Oslund to ride 24-hour Self-Supported attempt on Nov 12, 2024

Hello everyone,
Lord willing, I will begin riding my Cruzbike this coming Tuesday, Nov 12 at about 6:30am. The plan is to ride for 24 hours and to see how many miles I can do. I will be riding a 1.13 mile loop in my subdivision. Yeah - sounds boring and repetitive, but at least it is safe, well - except for any crossing golf-carts and alligators that frequent this area. haha.
When I finish at 6:30 on the 13th - I will celebrate my 65th birthday with hopefully the longest single ride I have even accomplished!
This is also an official WUCA Self-Supported record attempt.

I am also riding to raise awareness and money for a very special couple, Julia and Lorenzo, who live in Honduras. Julia was our translator when we lived there as missionaries “back in the day”. I also married them - so they hold an extra special place in my heart.

Sadly - their home was condemned earlier this year as a nearby river swallowed up the earth under it and it was unsafe. They are staying in temporary housing now and currently looking for a piece of land to build on or even a small complete house. Sounds like an easy task, right - wrong - it appears to be almost impossible to find anyone selling land in this rural area of Honduras that actually has legal papers for the land. It is very frustrating.

Earlier this year I created a “Go Fund Me” account for this need: This is the link:
https://gofund.me/f67182b9

Please prayerfully consider giving to this very worthy cause , and of course pray for them and those called to help.

Also - with every donation, please submit your “guess” as to how many miles I will be able to ride. (Text or email your guess to me and I will keep a list) The winner will get a special cycling Jersey made to commemorate this ride and the goal. ( Note - this is a Self-Supported ride, so that means that no one will be helping me by handing me food and drink. I must stop and refuel myself - which will obviously slow down my average speed just a bit.)

If you live in the area, I would love for you to ride (or drive) by and say hi. You are also free to call me at 828-216-7860 and chat for a minute or 2 with me while I am actually riding. Especially if you are up between 10pm and 6am EST - when I will need extra motivation to stay awake and keep pedaling! haha!

All the best with your 2nd 24 hour ride for this worthwhile cause. Every human counts! Hope you will be able to build more awareness of the circumstances that so many people have to live in and hope that the people that can afford it will help you with the fund raising. Coincidentally my birthday is the 13th as well so I will drink a toast on your efforts

Same birthdates - wow - that is so cool. My youngest son was also born on my birthday in 1995! I don't know much about statistics but my feeble brain tells me that you would need over 365 people together to have a chance for 2 of them have the same birthday. Oddly it does not take that many for some reason.

It's called the Birthday Paradox. If you have a group of 23 people then you have about a 50% chance that two of them will have the same birthday. It is because you compare your birthday to 22 others. But then the next person compares to 21 others, etc. Start summing these up and you get 253 comparisons. So many comparisons that your odds go way up.
