New Power Generator

I remember looking at their

I remember looking at their Kickstarter campaign. Looks like they ended up getting 148% funded as of May 2013 with their website stating a July 2014 delivery for pre-orders.

I contemplated this but had a few reservations. Note the position of the rider's heel in relation to the Atom - big feet might be a tight fit and I'm curious if it only works on the drive wheel or either wheel. Also they state in their FAQ that it is not currently designed to work with disc brakes.

If it will fit with no clearance problems it looks like it would be useful. Still looks a bit ungainly to me though...

Why a battery?

I don't see why they had to put such a big battery on it. Or any battery at all, as mobile devices already have a battery.

A generator to charge your device while riding would be sufficient. And simpler. And less expensive. And not give you one more thing you need to carry around.

Lastly, a front-wheel-mount option would allow the cable to reach your electronic device when it's mounted on the handlebars or in a handlebar bag.

2-3 ? years ago ,, before I got my android I was looking at these folks and and wahoo as ways of increasing run phone run time with gps on the bike.

Looked at voltage converters for hub generators but the always on bothered me even if it was not a noticable drag.

It was 5volt,
did not have to be on full time,
worked with disc brakes
designed for front wheel,,

.... was not sure of durability of spoke connection.
lights did not thrill me

I donated

I donated to the Kickstarter campaign and will post here what I learn, when I learn. Sadly, I had hoped to have the Atom before a tour this coming summer, but sourcing and manufacturing delays have put the shipment off until July.

The device can be used on the non-disc side of the front wheel provided there's ?20mm of space between the front dropout and the hub flange.

The decision to use a battery was, I believe, driven in part by doners wishes, as is the fact that there will be 2 USB ports. I suppose the reasoning is sound enough; to allow charging while stopped.

Mounting on the rear of any Cruzbike is a no-brainer.
