Paper, Rock, Scissors… Now What?

The CVRT rules committee is in complete disarray. If you watched last night’s WTRL Team Time Trial, you’d understand why. High Speed, Low Drag, and Sticky Bottles all brought their A-game, and now each team is claiming victory.

If you missed it, here’s how the chaos unfolded:
Otto had his high-octane High-Speed squad out of the gate like a rocket. Before this, Low Drag and Sticky Bottles started with 3- and 9-minute handicap leads respectively. High Speed set a blistering pace, averaging 40 kph, and overtook Low Drag at the 17-kilometer mark with their signature power pass—no free rides, no hitchhikers. Step one is complete. Next target: the Sticky Bottles they think.

But hold on—Slick Rick and Lear Jet Laura from Low Drag had latched onto the speeding train and weren’t letting go. According to the rules, if either of them beat a High-Speed rider to the finish, the win would go to Low Drag. No problem, Otto thought—14K to drop them.

Six kilometers later, High-Speed reeled in Sticky Bottles, executing another crushing power pass. The Stickies were left in the dust… or so it seemed. Ever the crafty bunch, the Sticky Bottles had noticed Low Drag riders clinging to High Speed’s draft. That meant Low Drag had fewer riders left behind, weakening Low dargs overall group pace. The Stickies still had a shot—if just one Low Drag rider finished behind them, Sticky Bottles would take the win. They were going for it.

Up front, High Speed was throwing everything at their unwelcome guest, but Slick Rick and Lear Jet Laura weren’t budging. This was undoubtedly coming down to a final 100-meter sprint. Seeing that Rick had things under control, Lear Jet dropped back to help her Low Drag teammates in their battle with Sticky Bottles.

With 2K to go, it was a dogfight. Low Drag and Sticky Bottles were shoulder to shoulder, too tired to quit. Meanwhile, up ahead, High Speed crossed the line first—but Slick Rick clipped the trailing High Speeder by just two-tenths of a second, stealing the win for Low Drag. If Low Drag can take Sticky Bottles they win it all!

Now back at the showdown between Low Drag and Sticky Bottles.
400 meters to go—Lear Jet leading out Low Drag like a Borax mule team, with Captain Hawkman, Rocketman Russell, and Gorgeous Greg in tow. Inside the same draft, the Sticky Bottles—Hardy, Jim, Paul, and Bobby—were fighting tooth and nail to just hang on. Bobby has done his share and fades. Three Bottlers still in the fight. To close to call.

200 meters—every rider for themselves.
At the line, Sticky Bottles did it. They edged out Low Drags trail riders by less than a second, claiming the crown for the day.
So… who actually won? Low Drag beat High Speed, who beat Sticky Bottles, who beat Low Drag!

After 15 hours of deliberation, the CVRT rules committee gave up. High Speed demanded Slick Rick join their team next race. Captain Hawk of Low Drag fired back: “Hell no, he won’t go!” That’s when the committee called it—"Enough. Let’s go to Burger King and get them all crowns.”

I know there is value to the rules we currently are using. I understood that as Rick was glued to HS's wheels.

Considering that we have 3 teams in the hunt, we can't have LD rider beat a SB team rider and claim victory. In the same race a SB rider beat a HS rider and claims victory. Even though HS beat the spread by beating everyone to the finish. They did not win. Since LD didn't lose to anyone. That must mean they win by coming in last?

Here's a thought. Next year, or sometime, we change the rule to: slower team rider must beat one of the final 4 to the line for the win to count.

Wish you had attended the rules committee meeting. But ftr Low Drag was beaten by Sticky bottles. You can help me sort this out on the 31st :) The Cruzbike Chicks come onboard on 3 April. If a team plans on getting a win they better do it before then. Those familiar with college sports will understand. The Cruzbike Chicks have gone into the portal with lots of NIL money and built one heck-of-A team. Come the third of April and we may hear the words "you've been chicked" a lot!
