Patterson-Metropolis CVP

This weekend I swapped out my 53/39 FSA compact double for the Patterson-Metropolis Transmission. The gear equivalents are 45/28. While losing about 18% of my top end, I gained 28% on the low end, which I desperately needed for some steep hills here in Kuala Lumpur.

The conversion was straight forward, and the result is clean and tidy. What little riding I did after the swap was positive; definitely more bottom-end spin. I don't yet know how the loss of top end will affect me. My gear inch went from about 27-88 to 19-75. The weight of the P-M is 1.7 kg, so I probably saw a net gain of about 1 kg.

The thing works beautifully. It can shift at a standstill and under load, which simplifies things on a recumbent.
