possible tandem frame

Hi

Reading old issues of Velo Vision i came across a Bernds folding tandem. I think it might be low enough for putting on the Cruzbike Conversion kit.

IF you left the rear wheel and drive train were it is and possibly build a completely new one for the front for the kit, then both would be able to peddle.

The klt would be the front riders drive system and the back rider would use the front riders former bottom bracket, assuming there is clearance between the stokers foot and the captain's a$$. Yes, it would be dual drive and IPS, all in one!

Wouldn't be very easy to control. With two separate drive systems under the control of two different people. Guy on the front brakes but rear guy carries on pedalling. :?

You have to communicate on a tandem. There are commercially available tandems with IPS on them. Even on a standard tandem, where the cranks are fixed together, you have to communicate. It's not fair to the stoker to suddenly stop the pedals and brake without announcing and the stoker has a free shot at the back of your head. Don't ask me how I know this.

stop being ridicules, the rear guy would easily detect just when the front guy applies the brakes.

I don't think Gromit is being ridiculous; it's a legitimate concern, especially if you have no tandem experience. You're right, the stoker can detect the change but it's still a good idea for the captain to communicate, if there's time.

Okay. I'll lay off the transmission issue. ;)
What about balancing the tandem? I wonder what the learning curve would be like in learning to ride it? Maybe two experienced Cruzbike riders would get on better than an experienced Cruzbiker and a novice. What do you think?

Thanks.

Definitely the captain would have to be an experienced Cruzer. I don't think the stoker would matter much.

Do you think it better that the stoker just sits still and lets the captain balance the tandem? That would be a lot of mass to move for one person. Two people and a heavier frame than a solo Cruzbike.

As long as the stoker knows not to give leaning inputs, it will be fine.

Here is the benchmark: http://mysite.verizon.net/ts72/back-2-back_article.html ... Enjoy. :ugeek: :geek: :)

Thanks for the link John. Very interesting tandem. :)
I hadn't really thought about back to back.
Certainly gets around the communication issue with the transmission when the rider's heads are so close together. ;) :)

wow thats insane,a back to back....talk about the teamwork needed to right that...

Its right at the next set of lights no its left....ahhhhhhh

Insane is the rider who thinks they can catch it. Highly capable unit, I was very impressed when I saw it.

another really folding version. The stoker will be real low though.

Not only is the stoker low, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to get foot clearance with the Captain's seat. That's my thinking, anyway.

Any one seen the W.Y.M.S.

Any one seen the W.Y.M.S. (With Your Main Squeeze) tandem by Bill Patterson? Here's a link to a tiny video. It can be controlled...by two middle-aged married people - with no hands! Well, the people have hands, but the captain doesn't steer with them.
