Q45 1x12 front chainring position

I switched my 2021 Q45 from the stock NX to GX AXS 12 speed. It was pretty easy install even with no experience. I left the front chainring as is.

For past 2 months, I noticed the low gears all sound ok, but the high gears are really noisy. Finally I got tired of it. I moved the chainring to the outside. No more noise!

So if anyone wants to do 1x12 GX AXS, you may want to consider moving the chainring if it's noisy.

Was the chain rubbing on the metal chain guard? It looks like your bike has one. Just trying to understand how moving the chainring quiets this situation?

When using a typical single chainring, you’ll essentially be cross chaining when at one extreme or the other. So, go with the gear ranges you use the most. I’m using a Rotor brand 1x that centers the chainring and I seem to be using the highest and lowest gears evenly, so it’s less of a problem.

It seems like moving the chainring out provides a better chain line to the little gears, at least visually.

Two thing can make that better.

1. If you when to a 12 speed, make sure you got a 12spd chain from KMC and a 12psd chainring (Oval if you can get it) and replace them to match.

2. Because of the sp12 add a washer between the right axle bolt and the dropout surface to bias everything thing to the right. Those few mm's make a big difference. I've had an ⅛ in the washer on my Silvio 2.0 for years because it's a 10spd design with and 11 spd setup.

I will look at getting a12 speed chainring later. Seems like the OEM (I suppose 11 speed) ring is ok for now. I do have 12 speed GX chain.
