John T... Do you have a QUEST frame set kit in mind, unpainted even for us tinkerers that have many more wheels than we have bikes ?? I guess what i'm saying is a bike w/o wheels... Thanks Bill

Yes, possible to buy Quest without wheels, contact Maria mparker@cruzbike.com. If there is demand for this I'll put a shopping cart item in. Just remember, 26 x 1.0 is the max tire size on the current stock.

Hi John,
I have a related question, would it be possible to make an order with customized components? In the near future I'm looking at getting a Quest equipped with 24" wheels and an internally geared hub.

Hi Bill,

Remember, the Quest has no canti pivots. You'll need disc brake wheels with fairly narrow rim width - 19mm or so.

You can probably adapt road calipers, but you'll need to fabricate a rear mount and switch to short-pull brake levers...

Just remindin' ya...

Best,

Doug

John T.. Thanks for the reply .. I'm hoping for a Quest Capable of wide tires.. I am thinking of a rear 20" hub motor... My Idea is the extra unsprung weight ,( motor & batterys) wouild best be handled with wider tires..

Hey Doug! .. I had thought about the things you brought up. A complete bike with wide tires would be the cat's meow... Disk brakes are the way to go.. There are rear hub motors with brake rotors now.. Thanks guys... Bill

HI John or Doug,

Do either of you know what is the largest 20"(406) tire size the would fit on the Quest? The reason I ask, is that I have a couple of 20"(406) wheel sets from other bikes that I could use on a Quest frame kit.

Thanks

Just posted some Quest 559 assembly pix:

There is also a photo set for the 451 for your reference:

Haven't aired up the tire yet but there is a little clearance in the front. Also have a 451 wheels to swap out and take some seat and bb measurements if for 559 riders that want the smaller wheel package. I think I would like a 559 with 406 wheels with 2" Schwable Big Apples giving ultra plushness and confidents on the rougher roads around where I ride. This particular 559 customer is working with a friend of my that is a frame builder and wheel builder on a custom set of 24" disc wheels.

with 406 tires, they are running just 10" or so from the axle, where the front and rear forks have not much tapered in. Even on the 451 which has a shorter chainstay, the drawings suggest you could fit a 20" x 3" - if one were available, but I have not tested this.

Thanks John,

For the info on 406 wheel sizes, I have two 20"(406) tandem sets one 1.5" and the other at 1.75" so I will have to give that some thought on using one of those for wheels for the Quest for loaded touring when I get the rear rack decided on.
I have a bike friday folding rack that I think can be made to work, It has a 65lb limit.

Hey ! things are looking up ,as far as tire size .. As I see it a 559 or 451 quest with 406 wheels could take a 2" or more tire width, even with the short chainstay. What happend to the 1.0 max??? Am I missing something?? Bill

Hi rearengine,
the 1" limit on the 26" is due to the minimal height fork, which was required to allow the frame could pack into a samsonite f'lite 31" suitcase. A larger tire comes into contact with the underside of the fork crown. I am in Taiwan at the moment and we are looking at what we might do on a later production run to allow a 26 x 1.5 tires. Widthwise, its no worries - so a 406, 451, or 520 could run wider, softer tires.

John T ! Thanks for the info.. The tire size isn't the problem I thought it was .. A 559 with 20" wheels, I have big apple 2.25 tires on the shelf ,, or someplace.. I have an 05 Rans V2 going on local Kraigs list..
