recumbent classifications

Here an email thread with Bryan Ball, of bentrideronline:

Bryan,
Its actually not FWD but MBB that is the key difference.

Its all about crank-front wheel interference, thats what defines SWB and LWB and that same aspect defines MBB where there is no such interference.

Twisting chain FWD still has crank wheel interference to manage, that is why SWB is entirely appropriate, so what twisting chain FWD makers prefer sheds no light on how to classify MBB.

Re: A little help... (Buyer's Guide Beta Testing)

Quads have their own because they don't fit into anything else. Every
other FWD manufacturer doesn't like to be treated differently. I think
Cruzbike is the only one that would like to be in a separate category.

Makes sense to me.

You can't pigeonhole any of the Cruzbikes with the current acceptable titles. The Silvio certainly isn't a high racer, even though it runs on big wheels. It's pretty much standard bicycle wheel base, so SWB doesn't fit at all.

I honestly think it would not be good for your exposure to put
cruzbike essentially in it's own category. Those that discount mbb
won't look there. I'd they're in with other swb's people will see them.

says Bryan.
That is a good point ...

I think I agree - changing minds from the inside is easier than from the outside. The length of the wheel base of a Cruz is the same as a "SWB" so lets go along with this. maybe we don't see this as the main point but the more inclusive we are then the more people we may see riding cruzbikes...
