rider with glasses on a low seat angle recumbent

Hi,

I'm Thomas and I'm new here in the Cruzbike forum. I'm from Germany and interested in the Cruzbike drive system.
I have been using recumbents since 10 years. My recent bike is a Bacchetta Giro. Since a couple of years I have to wear glasses. I use varifocals and if I look at the low seat angle from the Vendetta, I'm worried about that I can only see the near area in front of the bike.

Is here anybody with experience of wearing glasses on a low seat angle recumbent?

My Solution

Hi Thomas,
My progressive lens glasses don't work well on the Vendetta. Everything is blurry because the seat angle forces me to look through the reading portion of the glasses. My solution is simple. I wear contact lens when on the bike and glasses when off the bike.

Variable lenses

Hi Thomas,

Yes, I too wear variable lenses when riding my cruzbike. They are sun glasses made with the lower part of the lens being a very narrow band which then does not interfere with riding vision. However it does allow me to read a menu at the cafes. (or read some instrumentation on my handle bars.)

Sport glasses

I had made a pair of sport (shatter resistant) glasses that are single-focus with the prescription for long distance. I typically carry my regular multi-focal glasses on a waist pack (along with wallet, keys, etc.)

I cannot explain why but I'm against contact lens.
It is possible to ride the Silvio with your glasses? The seat angle is not as low as on the Vendetta.

Generally I ride my Vendetta

Generally I ride my Vendetta with my progressive lenses (no line bifocals) during most of my riding and usually wear my contact lenses if I'm racing. Having been caught in a significant downpour of rain recently with my glasses, it recalled to me one of the advantages of contacts - eyelids work like windshield wipers...

I added a piece of the white closed-cell foam sheet, about 5-6mm, that was part of the packing material from my frame kit. I put this foam sheet in between the bottom layer closed-cell foam and the top layer open-cell foam in the headrest which oriented my head so my distance vision is pretty much forward and my near vision lets me see my RFLKT display at the center handlebar mount position.

Before that small extra bit of padding my head was tilted a bit too far back and I was looking forward through part of the near vision part of my glasses.

Your experience may differ but this works well for me. I have heard of others who have had custom glasses made - usually a smaller lower near vision part of the lens or just riding with distance lenses and making do or carrying reading glasses if necessary. I generally carry a tiny pair of reading glasses with me when I'm wearing my contacts.

I am not absolutely sure that my glasses would work on the new Silvio. They did work on the v1 Silvio, but the v2 is reclined more. By incorporating Eric's suggestion you should be good. Personally, I would not let my glasses stop me from getting the bike I want. I would find a way to make it work. ...but that's just me.
