Showing off @ LBS...

Not a good day to ride (rain), but I needed to buy a pair of bottle mounts for the Conversion...so I packed it in the back of the truck and took it to my favorite LBS, http://trailheadinc.net/. These guys helped me so much when I was buying small parts to get it up and running that I thought they deserved to see what they had helped create. Much fun ensued.

In short, the Saturday crew went nuts over the Cruzbike Conversion. Everybody got to sit on it, they took pictures, wanted to know everything about it and generally thought it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen. They're a bunch of young kids (20's) and obviously open-minded about such things. I got 'em watching the Silvio video on the shop PC and they were very impressed.

They made me promise to bring it back when they could try it out (if it ever stops raining here). That should be a hoot! One of the guys just couldn't leave it alone and was talking to himself about donor bike frames as I left. I may have started an infection.

After I left, I wandered down to another LBS just down the road (and another source for parts). This is the "bike junk shop" and the guy has been in the business since the mid '70's. He is the only shop in town that regularly carries recumbents (SUN/EZ). Oddly, he was not very enthusiastic about it. He sat on it and just sort of went "hmmmm". Ah well, some get it, some don't!

I did get a few miles in yesterday afternoon and was chased down by another recumbent rider (on a SUN LWB)...who decided he would follow me and tell me his life story. :( After I'd had enough of that, I told him I needed to get my exercise in and cranked up the ol' legs. He tried to keep up for a few hundred yards... :D My truck was only 5mi away; I had loaded up and was just about to get in and go home when he pulled up and asked me what kind of motor I had hidden in that weird bike. He said he saw 23mph on his computer while I was rapidly dwindling in the distance. I suspect his computer hasn't been calibrated properly...OTOH, I was motivated to get out of there.

Bwaahaaa!

Well done, Marc....

I've decided to delve back into my kit bikes. I really like the freedom to try stuff with the kit; you can really build anything you want with it. As much as I love my red kit bike, I think I will disassemble it and try something new.

We have a newly-opened bike junk shop here now; these are great places to get lots of parts to experiment with on the cheap.

Now be nice to those poor conventional recumbent riders.... ;)

Dunno if you have a cyclometer on your bike, but 23 - 25 ain't unheard of... Even for fat guys like me!

Good onya!

Best,

Doug

Marc,

That's a great story!

I agree with Doug in that 23-25 is not out of the realm of doable. I can hold that longer as I get into better and better shape, too.

I also agree with Doug about going back to play with the kit some more. I got a few things in mind.

Great!

Me too, with the speed on the flat bits of road.
Cruzbikes are efficient and efficiency equals speed.

Well...

23-25 by-Gum-better-be "doable" on this thing! I do have a computer mounted (although only the cadence function is currently working...as I broke the 'speed' wire. A new harness was put on order Friday). I guess I was thinking the guy who was trying to talk my ears off was having trouble keeping up at 12-14. I doubt he actually hit 23...even downhill.

Before I broke the speed sensor wire, I was showing 18-20 in the supermarket parking lot...before I had 20 miles on her. I have no doubt I could post 25+ tomorrow. However, I don't intend to hurt myself and want to do this right. I want to get the Conversion into a 'stable state' so I can "just ride". So far, so good. I got the bottle-cages mounted tonight, one for a bottle-tool-kit and one for water.

I have a ways to go before I get my legs back. Taking nearly a year off of regular riding and gaining 40lbs hasn't done me any good. Based on my recent "Cruzbike Conversion" experience, I expect a sustainable 20mph cruise in the flats isn't out of order once I'm fitter. I don't expect much more out of the Conversion. Based on how much power it feels like I'm getting to the wheels, top end speed will be interesting to play with, I have a nice "test track" road nearby and a baseline speed on the Baron. I have goals and rewards planned. :D

The Catrike goes up for sale next week...proceeds going into the "Silvio Fund". :!:
