Silvio 3X10 to 2X11 conversion

First, I'll be frank...I do not work on bikes nor do i have a complete understanding of the mechanics. My used Silvio 1.0 came to me with 3X10 Ultegra components. I'm having a heck of a time finding a replacement front 3 ring deraillieur and I'm wondering if, for a few hundred dollars, it wouldn't make sense to replace all the drive components with Ultegra 8000 2X11 series components (which are much easier to come by)? If this is completely insane, please someone let me know. Thank you.

Ultegra 2x is about the best value/performance you can get. Rock solid and lasts forever. You can save a few grams w DA for an extra half a gazillion $

David,
I rode a Silvio 1.0 with SRAM components with a 3x10. I changed to a SRAM double and a new 2 speed derailleur to improve chainring shifting and was very satisfied with the results. I doubt you would unhappy with the results if you changed to a double ring.

Since I'm not a mental health professional I'm not qualified to render a judgement as to sanity. But, being an inveterate bicycle tinkerer I feel well qualified to say that replacing an entire drivetrain when merely a front derailleur is needed seems like overkill. If you have the means and having a spiffy new 2x11 drivetrain would make you happy then go for it, but it's certainly possible to source just a replacement FD.

BTW, getting a new Ultegra R8000 drivetrain "for a few hundred dollars" seems extremely optimistic, given that the crankset alone is over $200. If it was me I'd source an excellent condition used FD on eBay for $25-ish and spend the rest of the drivetrain upgrade budget on chi-chi Rapha cycling togs. Or champagne and caviar.

Thank you Bruce. Pretty straight forward switch? No mystery adaptor parts???

Hello Velocio, nice to meet you. I priced out (from various venders) shifters, front and rear der, crank, and cassette for $660. Of course, it'll go up from there for cables, tape, labor, etc but, i'll have all new "stuff" so, that's pretty cool. Beyond the cost, i'm most interested in knowing if it's a straight forward "switch" or if there are other factors to consider. Thanks.

Hey David,

It sounds like the mechanic at your favorite bike shop will be doing the work, so the only complexity for you is knowing which credit card to put the cost on. To a halfway decent mechanic there's nothing mysterious in setting up the drivetrain on a Cruzbike. The chainstay/slider/handlebar geometry is perhaps another story, but none of that will be affected in the drivetrain swap (assuming you get the same length crank arms).

New stuff is cool! I guess I'm overly frugal though, since most of my new stuff is other folks old stuff that was made available when they got new stuff. Seems like one of those "circle of life" kind of things (with me playing the role of the bottom feeder) ...

BTW, it looks like if you buy the whole Ultegra R8000 drivetrain as a group it can gotten for a bit over $500; e.g. https://www.coloradocyclist.com/shi...E0ea833xQ6Nip5Dfj9mmoFjdWnbV-7shoCOskQAvD_BwE
