Thor GS Easy seat mounting suggestions

I have been trying to get the S40 (2018) seat comfortable on longer rides. I have swapped from the mesh seat to a ventisit and added part of a foam mat under the seating area. It has gotten better with the changes, but not really comfortable. After 2-3 hours, I start moving around in my seat looking for a comfortable position.

I have read a number of threads on the Thor seats and I am willing to order one to try out in the hopes that it will make the seat more comfortable on long rides. I am looking at the GS Easy in size large (6’ tall).

Several (most?) of the threads talk about trimming to even mostly removing the seat wings on the S40/V20. Many of those threads are also 2 years old now. So I have just a few basic questions.

Is this still the only real option to mount the seat to an S40?
If I remove/trim the seat wings, what options are there for remounting the CruzBike seat if the Thor does not work out? Drill a hole through the center and mount to the Perez clamp?
Would I need to trim the upper and lower seat wings or just the upper?
Has Greg @ Thor moved the ribs out just a tad to work around this? I suspect not.

I looked for Rojo’s build thread for the donut cart 2.0, but only saw the teaser thread before the build. I suspect he is one of the most recent to mount a Thor seat to one of these.

I mounted the Easy Seat on my S40 and it has worked like a charm. Cut off the upper tabs and drilled the seat as required. If the ES doesn’t work out you can simply use sticky Velcro to re-attach the upper part of the stock seat. Will hold it plenty firmly. Just run parallel strips about 6” long. But I would never go back. Much better support for the lower back and the wider shoulder support makes a huge difference in handling and comfort. I started out w the stock pad over the 2cm VS pad but have since dumped it and use just the VS. If I had it to do over again I would go with the thicker VS pad.

Thank you @paco1961 . Any chance you took pictures of how you mounted the seat when you were building it? I am curious how you attached the upper seat.

Just reread my post and sorry that it was a little unclear. I drilled and mounted the lowers but not the uppers. I used only the Velcro on the upper. The upper tabs need to be removed to allow the ES to to sit flush to the frame.

Are you near Apex, NC? Did I remember that right? If so, you should stop by and look at the Thor GS Easy on my S40 before buying.

Thanks Doug. And yes, you remembered correctly. Please send me a DM with a time that works for you and hopefully we can arrange a day/time.

I'm curious to see your Easy Seat install as well. I have one on mine and would like to compare notes. Also, I'm amused how many of us are in Apex, NC.

I second the GS Easy seat. I really like the shoulder support.

I drilled two holes in the upper section and zip tied it. I have the 3 cm VS pad. At first I thought it's too thick, but after a while it's actually pretty good. I think it got compressed thinner.

By the way, if you get the seat, you may want to get their headrest as well. I wish I got one at the same time. I ended up using a small rolled up towel tied to the Bacchetta brain bag as my headrest. Not elegant but functional.

@cpml123 , did you use a head rest on the stock seat? Over the course of a few recumbents, all pretty close to 40 degree recline, I have not needed one yet. I a, curious if this seat changed your view or need for one.

For the stock seat, I needed the headrest as there was no shoulder support. However, I did not like the stock headrest because every time I hit a bump, I felt like I was getting a concussion.

For Thor seat, I don't need the headrest most of the time. However, when going flat road or downhill, I found it more relaxing to rest my head on my rolled up towel headrest.

You can use the "InstaMorph" or equivalent thermoplastic to create basically perfect shims and not have to cut off the tabs.

It takes all of 10 minutes to do, is 100% reversible, and costs like $10 in materials (which is probably 2-3x more material than you'll need).

I am thinking about getting the Seat Easy Thor seat. I am a bit confused as to "cutting tabs". Is this off the seat itself? We aren't talking about the bike frame, are we? Sorry for the confusion.

Also: Carbon fiber vs fiber glass. Any thoughts on which one to get, other than weight savings? Thanks!

Upper seat tabs on the frame. They won't fit between the molded fins on the lower (back) side of the Thor seat. Cut them off flush with the tubular part of the frame. Don't worry. You won't need them. Just mount the seat using the lower pair of tabs/bolts and then use a few long strips of sticky Velcro to stick the seat to the frame. Works like a charm.

Or you can drill 2 holes on the upper part of the seat and use zip tie to tie around the frame. Works great.

@Merczak73 I know I am nervous / worried about taking a saw of any form to the nice frame we have. There is at least one thread on here showing someone use a form of molding plastic to mount the seat and leave the tabs in tact. It basically raises the seat above the tabs / wings so there is no interference.

I have yet to order my seat, but will be ordering a carbon fiber one sometime this fall. I figure out which option I’ll use for mounting once I have it. I suspect I’ll trim off the upper tabs and use touch up paint to protect the frame.

The molded ribs on the back of the Volae Carbon Comfort seat appear to be wide enough to accommodate the tabs on an S40. So you maybe able to avoid cutting the frame tabs if you use that seat instead of the Thor. I was just comparing the Thor Easy and Volae shells today on my S40, and will start with the Volae as it seems to match the curvature of the S40 frame better and as noted has wider rib separation.

Hostel Shoppe has them on sale but looks like they are running out of some sizes.

Enjoy.
