Trainers For The CB

Not sure if this is the place to post this but I want to get more seat time on my Q during the week and was thinking of putting my Q on a trainer. I have an older trainer from my racing days but would like to hear what y'all are using or any suggestions. I did do a search for trainers but all I got was a lengthy discussion about what skewers work best with a trainer but no talk about the actual trainer! Lol
Thanks!

Hi @augiedog
This is a fine place to ask. The Racing area might catch some too but either way... below is a lengthy way to say most trainers should work fine unless something physically gets in the way (but that is unlikely in most cases especially with a Q). Which model do you have by the way? Quest v1, v2, v3, QX100, or Q45?

I have a QX100 and a conversion kit and have used both with an old Wheel On magnet trainer and I now use with a Stac Zero trainer (now Fliiiight trainer). They both work fine, you simply mount the front wheel in the trainer just like you would mount the rear wheel on a diamond frame bike (slide the trainer straight forward to the front wheel - front still facing forward.) From my experience you may want a mat to put the trainer on and you may want to place the rear wheel against a wall or something immoveable so that it can't move backwards. Both of these suggestions are because with our particular pedalling motion there ends up being more rotational force around the steering axis which can result in the trainer trying to rotate and move backwards.

Note that exclusive time on the trainer without any outside riding can work slightly different muscles because you are not working the balancing parts of riding off-trainer, but that would be the same with a diamond frame.

Most of those other trainer posts and threads on the forum deal with specifics of mounting a specific bike/trainer combo or are trying to incorporate the steering input into the trainer use so you can find lots of useful information. I think the direct answer to your question is probably this:

I can't think of a situation that would not work for a Q. Unless the specs of the trainer vs. bike don't match (eg. bike has road wheels but trainer can only handle up to mountain bike size wheels or wheel-off trainer has different axle diameter requirements from the actual bike. The Q is much more flexible in this regard If I am reading the other discussions correctly because it has more space in the dropout area.

If your front wheel / front dropouts are suitable dimensions for a particular trainer then it will work for your Q. (That is, you will only be out of luck with a trainer if it wouldn't work if the same wheel was mounted on a diamond frame.

Hope this helps.

Hey Benphyer
I have a Q559/V1 and I'm glad to find out I will be able to use a trainer. I will have to find a different trainer. Like I said in my post it's an older model that requires me to remove the front wheel and the bike is anchored by securing it by the bottom bracket and locking the fork to the front bracket.
Thanks for your help!

Now you have caught my curiousity. Do you have a picture or the name of the trainer so I can look up a picture?

I have used Silvio and Vendetta on KICKR Core and regular KICKR. I am sure it will work with a Q too.
It is a great training aid and well worth the money in my opinion.
