V2 Tires

Good morning all my fellow Vendetta enthusiasts!
I'm about to get some new tires for my Vendetta. I currently have Continental Grand Prix 5000 700 x 25 on it and want to put 700 x 28's on it...

It looks like there's enough clearance for the slightly bigger tire...
Anyone know for sure?

Thanks and Blessings,
Rudy (DocS)

I looked at the Bicycle Rolling Resistance page, specifically comparing the different sizes of these tires and there's only a couple mm difference in actual measurement between the 25s and 28s...

I know that what the Manufacturer publishes isn't always what you get, so I thought I'd ask you guys...

I looked at my bike with the 25s and it looks like I shouldn't have any clearance issues...

Blessings,
DocS (Rudy)

I’m running 28mm SCHWALBE PRO ONE TLE HS 493‘s on my V20. They fit fine with some clearance at the fork crown and just a teeny bit of room at the rear lower brake bridge.

The Continental Grand Prix 5000 700 X 28 tires came in Saturday morning :) I got them mounted and did a 45 mile hilly ride yesterday with some friends.
The tires fit with room to spare! I had inflated them up to 90lbs, but think I'll test out 80lbs tonight for my ride.

Nice ride with speeds up to 45mph!

Thank again all!

Blessings,

I have those same tires on my S30. I've been running them at 80 psi, maybe a tad more up front. Rider weight 135. I feel like I'm getting a little better grip in turns than I did with the Conti GP 4 Seasons (700 x 28, 90 psi) I was running before. I don't notice any difference in speed.

Hi Dan with the Conti 4000 there is no room I might have 1/16th of clearance. I run at 85psi after cleaning the bike yesterday I didn't tighten the rear skewer enough it was rubbing and had to stop and tighten the skewer

Sonnybea,

I do love my GP 5000 TL 28mm on my V20. I first tried 25mm TL and like them, but I ran over a large piece of glass and totally destroyed the rear tire, so I ordered the 28mm. It made a huge difference going from 25mm to the 28mm, so I put them on both front and rear. So, my thinking is if the 28's are more comfortable and better traction, then the 32mm must be better than the 28's. I ride in FL in the rain and traction is an issue sometimes. I find that the V20 is more prone to lose rear traction than my DF bike in wet conditions, so I am looking to get the best traction as possible.

Do you know the internal width of your wheels and if they are Tubeless, Tubeless Ready or Clinchers? I have Mavic 2020 Ksyrium Elite UST (Tubeless) wheels and the internal width dimension is 19mm across and I also have Mavic Ksyrium Elite Clinchers that measure 16mm across the internal width. The extra width of the UST wheels spreads the tire and reduces its height. If I put a 28 GP 5000 TL tire on the clincher wheels, then the tires are both higher and wider by 3 to 4 mm above and beyond the width of the wheels. The UST (Tubeless) wheels seat the tire lower and wider in the wheels, but I don't know if it is enough to clear 4 mm more from going to a 32mm tire.

I may order a 32mm GP 5000 TL tire and report back to the forum. I do tubeless maintenance every 3 months, so September is the month that I check and add or replace the tire sealant, but this time I will be completely removing the tires, clean and inspection for holes and cracks, and then replacing the tire sealant. I have always used Stans on all of my mountain bikes, but the higher pressures of a road bike tire means that it takes a little longer to seal a pinhole and the Stans sealant gets everwhere when trying to seal at 75 psi, so I am trying some Truckerco Cream 2 this time because many forums have stated that it seals faster in higher pressures situations than Stans.

I have now installed a 32mm GP 5000 TL on the front of my V20 and still have 2mm clearance at its closest point. I installed it on the front because I believe that the front has a little less clearance than the rear. This 32mm tire came with a little more runout where the seam meets on the inside of the tire, so there is a wobble of about 2mm side to side. I have tried everything that I know to improve the wobble, but it remains at 2mm (soap, stretching, reseating, more stretching, and seating). These TL tires don't stretch much!!! I would have sent it back if I didn't have clearance, but I really wanted to try it out.

Seating the GP 5000 TL tires have been easily achieve with only a manual mountain bike tire pump that has higher air volume and less pressure. I seated this tire about 2 dozen times when working on the runout issue. The installation on the rim is where these tires are a pain in the hands. I use a tire jack to install them, but even with a tire jack, you may need one more hand for that last inch of tire lip. This is because my Ksyriums don't have an internal deep-v for the recess of the tire bead to provide more tire length for that last inch.

I still have about 3mm height clearance on the brake caliper and frame, but the side of the brake caliper is only about 2mm on one side due to the runout issue of the tire, so this means that I will have to pay attention to the brake caliper side to side alignment which is no big deal to me because it is one of my pre-ride checks.

I have put about 75 miles on this tire and it feels great over bumps and dropping into corners. It really excels on chip-sealed roads by eliminating most of the chatter from the endless bumps. I have tried 70, 65 and 60 lbs of pressure so far and I believe that I will stick to 60lbs. There are no signs of sealant on the tire seat at 60lbs, so I am not worried about pinch flats at this pressure. I may even try 55lbs, but I think that I am pushing it at 60lbs.

I don't know if it has better traction because I haven't ridden in the rain yet. I do know that I like them much better, so I order one for the rear.

In conclusion, 32 GP 5000 TL tires will fit on a V20 without rubbing, but it will depend on your wheelset and tire runout (wobble).
