V20 Assembly

HeyMikey

Hitting the Gateway Trail!
Finally pulled the pin on the purchase of a V20. It arrived this afternoon and I'm in the initial assembly stages when I noticed this at the front derailleur. This small bar is rubbing against the inner ring and I do not think that is normal. Not sure what to do at this point. I don't feel comfortable with the next step (assembly of front drive wheel) until someone can give me some pointers. Any information would be appreciated.

That small bar with the word SRAM on it?
That’s just a chain-keeper.
Keeps the chain from coming all the way off when downshifting all the way quickly.
Simply adjust its position by loosening that Allen screw at the joint so that it doesn’t rub.

you may have to adjust further once you get the chain on.

Edit: it’s called a chain catcher or chain spotter.
This video might help.

Thanks Lief. I have a good mechanical aptitude, but there are many things about bikes that are still new to me and I don't feel like pushing my luck! Thanks again!

Agreed and little location cover Phillips head screw is easy to strip for the mechanical clutz . I didn’t but someone I know did. ;)

and congratulations on buying a dream bike. Let the games begin.

Two things: I don't think the Zefal Spy Mirror I purchased for this bike is going to give me enough confidence to see what's coming up behind me. What other mirrors are owners using on the V20 and where are you mounting it on the bars so you can utilize it without it getting in the way of multiple hand positions?

And: The stock headrest might be a little more layed back than what I deem to be comfortable with as far as line sight over the hood (my nose) :)! Which accessory (suspension or performance) headrest would raise my head up by maybe an inch or two to gain that better line sight down road?

Any insight on this would be appreciated! Thanks!

as to mirrors scroll down this thread, best mirrors bar none ;) https://forum.cruzbike.com/threads/roberts-v20-build.9675/

The thread referenced above includes this quote from Robert Holler concerning the B&M Cyclestar mirror: "If you remove the stalk mount you can pop the mirror straight into the part that attaches to the bar for a clean look." I saw Robert do such a Cyclestar stalk-ectomy in one of the many Cruzbike videos I've watched (by the way, those videos are extremely well done for what they are and have been very helpful), so I decided to have a go with one of my Cyclestar mirrors. Has anyone had success mounting the mirror bit on the nubbin on the bar mount, as Robert did so easily in the video? I've pushed (hard!) (really hard!!) and twisted and lubricated the bits with alcohol and filed away on the plastic nubbin and ... no joy. After attacking this on three different occasions I admit defeat. Half my kingdom to anyone who can tell me how to make this happen.

And am I to assume that the B&M mirror is flat (or only slightly convex) glass as opposed to very convex like the Zefal mirror? The Zefal is too small and too convex for me.

Thats how I have mine mounted, I've done this on 3-4 mirrors with no issues.

yep I’ve done two mirrors that way successfully. You were able to remove the stalk ball from the mirror using leveraged force. Now place the band and nubbin firmly on the handlebar. Push down the mirror with fleshy thumb part of your palm of your hand on glass surface with force .This should pop on. If not pop glass into hot water for a few minutes and retry. I never filed or lubed nubbin.

Won’t say it was easy but with some elbow grease it popped into place. No actual lube at all. I run one on each side.

Jond & Paco1961, thanks for the encouragement and tips on the Cyclestar mirror mod. I sanded a bit more on the mold seam on the plastic nubbin, soaked the back of the mirror in (very!) hot water and channeled my inner 800 pound gorilla when pressing the mount into the backside of the mirror and ... As my young nieces like to say, "Boom goes the dynamite!" In this case that means that the nubbin popped into it's rightful place on the back of the mirror -- not that the glass mirror exploded. Thankfully.

Excited to give my newly stalkless mirror a run. Thanks again for the tips!

I use the Zefal Spy mirrors on my V20--one on each side, about 4 inches out from center, where they stay out of the way of hand positions. When I was starting out five years ago, these mirrors didn't seem adequate, but over time I became used to them. Now they serve me well, have for a long time, and I like that they are small. I have no experience with the B&M mirror, but it sounds like it works well too. As for the Spy mirror, it could just be a matter of acclimating to it.

The problem with the zefal spy is the plastic reflective surface over time degrades . The cyclestar glass mirror is a little less aero being slightly larger but it lasts gives a crisp useful view and is better for older eyes. You really only need one per bike.

edit the degradation amounts to loss of reflectivity through clouding . Pitting and fine scratching. Probably used four zefal units over six years so it is over time and may be related to area climate and individual care. I’m fussy and keep my bikes very clean. With one mirror I use a varia Radar always. .

I used two Zefal Spy mirrors on my B------a Giro, but only briefly. The B&M Cyclestar is certainly less convex (flat?) and has more useful viewing area, so it may address the issues HeyMikey had with the Zefal Spy. The reason I quickly retired my Spy's is that the reflective surface appears to be some sort of metalized plastic, not a proper glass mirror like the B&M, so the "image quality" was noticeably worse to my substandard eyeballs. On the plus, the Spy's are less expensive and I prefer the shape and mounting. Maybe my 2 came from a batch with out-of-spec, poor reflecting surfaces?

before you spend more money let the neckrest out another inch or so. This action will counter intuitively allow your head to be more vertical. You should be double triple chinning. Grab the cyclestar mirror though and modify it for sure.
