Let's make this a bottom bracket stuff thread
Hi,
My name is Martin, and I'm a recent V frameset owner
During the build I had an idea I'd like to share regarding the need for HTII cranksets. Since I have lots of bike stuff, mostly old, I experimented with a square taper BB and some old BB cups, HT and Octalink.This is what I got, it already fits one of my cranksets. A slightly longer axle than the 102mm shown will increase the choice of cranks that will fit. I hope to find a combo that will be lighter and narrower than the cheap HT crankset I use for test riding. They made some nice superlight stuff back in the day.

I have an affection for some of the older technologies, also.
The beauty of what you've got there is that you can use modern ceramic ball bearings in that setup and get a really efficient bottom bracket that's light weight, low friction, and it will accept a broad range of crank sets.
Some of the old stuff was really well optimized for function and weight. I remember a weight comparison John T sent me between an old school set of "ten speed" brake levers vs. a Shimano brifter. Half the weight and all the functionality.
Really, this is the stuff that piques my interest more than buying the latest go-fast gadget and bolting it on...

Found my 150g "tune" 110mm BB with two fully threaded adjustable cups. That should make for a sub-140 Q-factor together with Stronglight "107" cranks. Now to teach my machine left hand threads...
I was a little worried about the ~ 3mm of thread that you can get out of a standard HTII cup if used as a lockring, so I'll make adapter lockrings out of 7075 and move the cups out by a mm with bearing spacers, should give some 4.5mm of thread.
I'm a bit of a weight weenie, but ceramic bearings are beyond my reach. The tune runs fine, much nicer than a well broken-in HTII BB.

I have knee problem with narrow cranks. I realized that I need cranks with ~163 mm Q-factor to be able to use common clipless pedals (I use Shimano SPD). I will be OK with few mm wider cranks but not with narrower. Road doubles are ~ 142 mm wide and Ultegra triple is ~155 mm wide.
Yes, I can use Speedplay Zero with longer axle but It would be really expensive because I would need to also buy new boots with pedals. And I am not sure if it is possible to buy loner axle Speedplay in Czech Republic.

the axle is from a BB with deep groove ball bearings. These will almost fit into the cup from an HTII bottom bracket, only some machining required. In my case, I had to fill the gap in diameter with strong aluminum foil. Meant for testing only, I'm still using it without any trouble whatsoever. The right hand cup is done this way, the left hand cup is from an Octalink BB and just fit over the bearing. All that was needed on the left side was a lockring, which I made from the leftover HTII cup. You'll need a lathe for this step, I don't think you could cut the threads with bike shop tools.
A less complicated way would be to find pedal extenders. Don't know in which sizes they come.
