Nigel,
Gearing choices will be determined largely by your terrain, your cadence preference, and how strong a rider you are.
My new V has 50/34 chain rings and a 11/36 cassette. I need the low gearing because A) I'm weak, B) I live & ride in the mountains of western North Carolina, where climbing is the rule, and C) I like a high cadence.
In my limited miles on it, I don't envision needing taller/faster gearing, but some climbs I may wish I had even lower still. We'll see.
Other riders who are stronger and/or ride on flat terrain usually use much taller gearing.
