Water bottle quandary

I’m struggling a little with the water bottle issue. I got used to the behind the seat cages on my Silvio 1.0 and realize that without shimming the cages out, this probably won’t work with my S40.

I did a search and see a few workarounds offered. I’m well aware of the headrest mount and I can’t wrap my mind around the water weight being that high and right out in the sun. I will probably go that route if I can’t sort something out that’s more satisfactory.

How have others gotten around this? I’m thinking of carving out some shims from UHMW, or something.

Thanks!

Mark,

I used plastic spacer that I purchased at a hardware store along with longer M5 bolts. I also used the top pre-drilled hole as my bottom mount hole and drilled a new top hole into the carbon fiber seat pan. Despite moving the cage upward on the seat, I still had issues with the bottles ejecting occasionally. ( opted for side entry cages, which are more convenient but offer lest bottle grip.) Here is the thread of how I solved the problem, https://cruzbike.com/forum/threads/water-bottle-loss-prevention.12447/ One other challenge is that the cages are mounted very close to the frame. I used some electrical tape to eliminate any frame wear. You will also find several other creative methods as you search the forum threads such as, https://cruzbike.com/forum/threads/s40-water-bottle-mount-simplified.12471/#post-146589

Found both threads while looking around. I could see where those cages would let go of the bottle pretty easily. I have the cages I want, which are basically the same ones I have on my S 1.0. I know the bottles stay in them; I've never dropped a bottle (knocking furiously on wood). I guess I need to go cruise the hardware department and figure out shims.

I don't think it would work because of the lip around the edge of the seat. The same lip is why you can't mount a cage flush with the seat back. I assume the lip is structural, too.

Sorry.

I went and dug my ADEM from the parts bin and you're right, you'd be in the same standoff searching quandary. The bottle cages would need standoffs to space the lip to the ADEM as I see it, now. I don't like reaching for the bottle that way, so, I took it off the day I put it on.

No worries, at all! Thank you for the suggestion! I like the bottles behind the seat like that. It took a minute to get used to it, but now, I wouldn't have it any other way. So, I will figure it out, one way, or the other.

This works like a charm on my S40. I have been on several centuries, over nasty RR tracks at ill advised speed and some nasty cobbles. Not a dropped bottle in 2000 miles. The “bottom” cage hole bolted to the rack boss with a matching cage on the other side. I then tied the “top” of the two cages together with a zip tie snug and tight against the frame. I know it looks like they’d bounce out but no problem at all. Bontrager cf cages.

Tried the head rest mount but never felt comfortable with it

@paco1961 Can you post a picture(s) of how it is mounted without the water bottle in order to see the mounting points? Cheers.

Here you go. One bolt in the bottom cage hole, using the mount for the under seat rack. The two bottles have their upper mounting holes tied together with a zip tie.

And a correction to earlier post - the water bottle cages are not carbon fiber Bontrager. They are fiberglass Specialized.

The fiberglass specialized are the same cages I use on my Silvio 1.0. They have been on there since day one and I have never lost a bottle out of them. Your image did not show up, though.

Strange. I just pulled up the thread and the image shows up on my screen both as a full sized image and a thumbnail in the reply msg. I'll re-post here but if it doesn't show up for you send me your email in a PM and I'll email you the photo

Don't ride in the wet with that, if you want to drink from your water bottle!

The behind the headrest may feel weird, but it points the drinking-ends away from the muck-flinging-device (wheel).

If you don't ride when the pavement is wet, this doesn't matter, of course.

Bachetta brain bag and water bladder with hose. Magnet or retractable lanyard. 1;5 litre perfect fit for pouch.

Make your frame this time from aluminium flat bar.

Practical storage and easy. For shorter rides I just pull over and take bidon from bag.

Re-posted from here:
.....but instead of using the hose clamps, I cannibalized some aluminium bars that I found in my office desk drawer that are normally used for holding up file folders. Wrapped them with black vinyl, trimmed and drilled:
