In Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, second only to Vancouver in the 2010 Economist's list of most livable cities, Tiddalik the frog must have been drinking after the rain and hail of previous weeks (thanks Nina for the Tiddalik reference). A perfect sunny weekend. Sunday marked the beginning of the Quest.
I borrowed a Quest 451 from Kim Tolhurst while he was on leave, in the belief that it would be the best way to introduce Melanie (wife), Linda (sister) and Jenna (niece) to the Cruzbike experience. Nina (daughter) was working so she couldn't join in the fun. Kim also believes I'll be returning the Quest when he returns.
Melanie watched my life with Sofrider V1 from a distance - "that's a scary bike - you wouldn't get me on that". She watched the Silvio build with a litle more interest - "that looks more like a normal bike".
Finally, with the Quest 451 she suggested that perhaps she could ride it. Plus, and this is obviously important: "It was Orange".
I'm delighted to report that within an hour, all three had progressed to the stage of feet on pedals and riding. The attached collage shows some posed shots, along the top, with me looking somewhat dorky on my Silvio, while explaining the "Roll, Steer, Pedal and Relax" approach to Jenna. Linda on the right looks relaxed and comfortable.
Melanie appears along the bottom: riding to the left, then the right and finally disappearing into the distance: a natural? She came back. Watch out Maria!
We live in a quiet street that is closed at one end, so there is not a lot of traffic on a Sunday. It was like being a kid again, playing on the street, as Melanie remarked. Lots of fun was had by all - learning to ride a bike again - or relearning to ride your first tricycle? A simple pleasure as JFK once said.
