S40 Seat Adjustment - Steps

Watched Robert’s videos! I’m at like a 6 on the scale on the boom arm. But I’m only 5’10. Plus I’m getting a little knee discomfort. I want to bring the pedals a little closer to me. I understand that it’s all about how it feels but could someone explain the point of each of the adjustments? For example, what’s the difference between moving the whole boom steering piece up or down versus moving the feet away from steering in order to get more or less distance.

I recommend a start here.

Pay attention to knee pain. If it is at the front or tops of your knees, your feet are probably a little too close in. If it is at the back or underneath your feet are probably a little too far out. Make small adjustments, like 2mm at a time, until there is no pain..

Hand position is more variable. Some people like their arms pretty straight, while others like a bend at the elbow. I like enough bend at the elbow that my arms don't feel tense. My goal is to feel relaxed on the bike.

Definitely emphasize individual small adjustments once you have a good general fit. Only make one change at a time and wait fro several miles before assessing whether or not it was helpful.

For arm reach - a good position will lead to a lot of power on tap if you want it, but an off arm position will mean less power. Think of doing a pushup - if your arms are too high/low/close/straight you don't have the same immediate "punch" like when your arms are in that just right position to pull/push.

Play with the hand position. Ride gripping the bars low/high etc - if you need to lower the bars for the sweet spot, the steer tube on the S40 can be cut down easily. I haven't encountered anyone - even very tall riders - who needed it higher.

Some things are just physically set in stone based on your body dimensions - the X-seam will be one, the length from the top of the pedal stroke to the handlebars is the other - those are physical limitations but after that dialing it in the part of the fun.
