The S40 works with most roof-rack bike carriers!

I was relieved to figure out that the S40 fits on my Land Rover branded roof rack, wheel mounting (as a opposed to fork mounting) bike carrier made for diamond framed bikes. There are 2 tricks:
* Mount it backwards.
* Turn the front wheel mount around 180 degrees, this lets it slide back as far as you need it to. You can see what I mean in the video.

This means it should fit all of these types of mounts, the Thule, BMW and Volovo mounts all seem identical and so are all the others (probably).

Here's my V20c on Cycle of Life Adventures' trailer. Note the velcro strap to keep the seat from flying off completely. And the strap securing the front wheel better.

I take my seat pad off whenever it‘s mounted on my car rack. A strap work but I would see it flutter occasionally. I could add more Velcro but opted for removal.

OK, I’ll freely admit I could use more upper body strength but there’s no way I could lift the S40 up there and take it off by myself without doing serious damage to that beautiful car!

I used to use a roof mount--then one day I forgot the bike was up there and drove into the garage--it did not go well--yes, stupid and avoidable--but I stick to hitch racks now. I did modify my 1up rack a little bit to improve fit. Intown I do not worry about the seat, but if I plan on highway speeds, I add a strap or remove the cushion.

This is the kind of thing I would do, which is one reason why I've never tried a roof rack. In fact, I feel the same way about anything outside the car - my vehicle has a somewhat tight fit into the garage, and I'm afraid I'd accidentally close the garage door on the bike hanging off the back.

Probably my only disappointment with my S40 has been that I have been unable to find a way to transport the bike upright inside my Ford Transit Connect minivan. For years we've stuck with Honda Elements and Transit Connects because they are highly configurable and we've always been able to transport our bikes inside while upright without removing wheels or other parts. This works well for regular DF bikes and also worked okay for my Burley Hepcat recumbent - we use bungie cords to secure the bike to one side and still have plenty of room for other gear. But the S40 is about 2-3 inches taller. I can still carry the bike inside, but I have to lay more seats down and lean it on one side - not optimum.

I use a hitch rack which works well but I definitely share the concern about shutting the garage door on the bike. I've always thought a phone app that you can activate when you put the bike on the rack would be useful. Once activated it'd generate loud alerts as you approach your garage.

Of course there are lots of things that could still go wrong (forget to activate, volume turned down on phone, ...) but it'd be something.
