I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now, A V20c design journal

Ok, so this post is mostly about two technological changes to my usual repertoire and a new one. Historically I have used Molten Speed-wax and Orange Endurance sealant. Speed-wax was such an easy win, but darn if Tubeless sealant was a long and messy journey. 4 Generations of wheels later, and...

28mm is about the max you want to run on those frames. There are corner cases, but 28mm on at 19inner width rim was bigger back in those days. But hey I know a guy, and he has a set of 60/40 matched Reynolds custom-made for that frameset that runs 28mm that might also be for sales ......

Bar tape tips/tricks - just keep unraveling on me

Learn with cork tape it’s cheap. Like video above, do a 50% overlap, and practice pulling it tight without stretching it, that’s trickier than you think. And use screw-in end caps. Cork can usually be re-wrapped. When you are good doing cork, then (if you can get it) move on to the thin stuff...

For Sale: Silvio 2.1 with Carbon Wheels and Shimano Di2 (yes that Silvio)

I took the bike apart to verify the boom length since I did that mode so many years ago. The bike can be configured for a maximum x-seam of 46 inches The length maintains the 110mm overlap required to make the boom as stiff as possible (we computed that around here eons ago. Don't ask me how...

I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now, A V20c design journal

Love that Data Here's the noodling going on in the build lab. How small can we get the front ring to get the weight down on the nose? While ensuring we we cab be in a good cog size when cruising? Cruising I define as 75-90 RPM and traveling 19-24mph. I want to be in a 17T-13T range for...

Yeah prices on cassettes are way up. But you can get cool things like: https://us.3t.bike/en/products/drivetrain/cassette-579.html If I was building a 2x11 I’d use one of those and 34/50 qring to make a climber. That would have rocked on the RAAM bikes Sunrace still makes some affordable stuff...

I never look back, darling. It distracts from the now, A V20c design journal

I consider that 9T a going downhill gear. Part of this experiment is to put it on the road and see how it feels. Cassette spacing is always a thing. You have to tweak if the gaps leave you at a crap cadence for a given speed. For me, I always need two things: (1) A low gear I can push on 10%...

Plan revision. I exchanged some info with Jim Parker today that made me stop and go back and look at the 10-50 stuff despite it's pricing. I've come around to now agree with Jim that the 44/46 Rings give more options. So after doing some research, I determine that HELIX has a 9-50T Cassette...

For Sale: Silvio 2.1 with Carbon Wheels and Shimano Di2 (yes that Silvio)

It's definitely a piece of history. I still have the original dual water bottle prototype that Steve made for me; which became the current product we all use, I still use the prototype because it works, so why buy one (I have like 3) Perez clamp #4 is already on that bike. I wonder if the...

For Sale: Silvio 2.1 with Carbon Wheels and Shimano Di2 (yes that Silvio)

Not faster but more popular for sure; the The S29/30 angle means DF's can draft off you if they can catch your wheel and you sit up. I've done group rideson the Silvio, (pre covid) and when it's my turn to pull, I just sit up and go hard like it's a hill. When it's not my turn on the front this...

    V2 headset play

Pull the headset apart, remove the space and bearing, etc. Clean everything but the bearings in a sonic cleaning. Get some synthetic grease lub it up and put it back together. If it's still sloppy then the bearing is shot, or the bearing cups were likely crushed by over-tightening the assembly...

For Sale: Silvio 2.1 with Carbon Wheels and Shimano Di2 (yes that Silvio)

I should probably watch my snarky humor. When you put one of these bikes in a shipping box, you must remove the handlebars and disconnect the boom from the fork. The handlebars then rotate 90 degrees, and you shrink-wrap it all together. I have done that several times on other bikes. The Di2...
