    Q45 discomfort?

Yes! YES! You may or may not like the stock seat, but I can guarantee you won't have the same problems as on a DF bike. It's a whole different world. However, I had seat discomfort (recumbutt) from the stock Q45 seat on long rides and ended up buying a Thor seat ... Yeah, pricey, but it...

    Dynamic Boom Question...

In the threads @castlerobber mentions, and others, there is also discussion about the spring shock in the head tube causing flex and power loss. Definitely worth searching the Q forums as these topics have been well gone over. Try getting the front end assembly (head tube/fork, and...

    recumbent clothing

Fairing, of course. Perfectly dry feet and hands. Considerably warmer out of the wind, let's say worth one clothing layer, plus the effect of being dry. That's me over on the right. I posted detailed instructions for an earlier version (link below) and still intend to do it for the...

Flying the Flag without the drag

@Andrew Wilson I'm glad to see the explicit political comments edited out of this thread. We come here to discuss bicycles, and to learn from each other. One of the best parts of this forum is that there's no need to know or care about each others' strongly-held (or not) viewpoints. "Don't ask...

    Front suspension

Absolutely the front triangle is moveable, not just for the suspension but for adjusting the boom length. That can be a pretty large change. Both the BB connection and the one at the axle can rotate.

    Front suspension

Find someone with a used Q2 for sale. That had a steering-tube spring suspension. I put more than 10k miles on mine (now ride a Q45, no front suspension). But search these forums, the Q2 suspension caused other problems, mainly a loose and wiggly front end that ate power. I think I have the...

    fairing missing from end bikeism

From Wikipedia "bicycle fairing": A bicycle fairing is a full or partial covering for a bicycle to reduce aerodynamicdrag or to protect the rider from the elements.[1] The rest of the article comments on the aerodynamics of various partial fairings, but in fact cites very few sources and it...

    fairing missing from end bikeism

Ok. But we need a better word for my whatever than "umbrella". I'm looking forward to the video you posted but right now I've gotta throw on my raincoat, pull out the bike, and go to work. I'll just note that it might not take much lateral area to provide significant aero benefits. The Zzipper...

    fairing missing from end bikeism

I'll cop to it being mostly a brolly. Not a bit ashamed of enjoying dry hands and feet, and clean drivetrain. It sure makes it more palatable to get on the bike some morning when it's 37F and spitting rain. Like this morning for instance, when the fairing plus a simple raincoat kept me dry...

    fairing missing from end bikeism

My Q45 fairing is indeed not much "more than an umbrella", but then again that's my main need as a year-round commuter in rainy Seattle. @Balor is mostly correct in the above except for the statement about "huge wind shear problems". My many years and thousands of miles riding on exposed...

    Q45 First Ride - Knee Pain ...

I will not try to diagnose from afar, but I will say that these bikes have a much larger set of adjustments than you might be used to. As we say in the physics biz, the parameter space is very large. Very small adjustments of boom length, seat position, seat angle make a huge difference. Nothing...

    fairing missing from end bikeism

I've ridden fairings on recumbents for decades, mostly for raingear. I'm a daily year-round commuter in Seattle ... nuff said. There's quite a bit of discussion here over the years (seems like these topics get discussed, then forgotten, and we go round and round again). Simply searching...

    Fenders for a Q-45

I had this same problem and tried the same solution (reinforcement with an aluminum strip; see pics above) ... still broke it. Then I went riding with the observant @Lief Zimmerman, who pointed out that my (air) shock was too soft and the seat post was hitting the fender on hard bumps...

Solo touring in Norway on a loaded Vendetta

Great report! Amazing how you keep your bike so clean on all those country roads, especially with gravel, mist, rain. Mine looks worse than that just riding around the block on a sunny day.

    Electric conversion

About 45 degrees. Pretty much as upright as it goes. I recently got a Thor seat so the angle/position isn't precise, nor directly comparable. (By the way, when I get a few more miles on it I will report my experience ... short answer, it's excellent and worth the $200). One factor was my need...

    Electric conversion

Hmmm. I guess I'm too late. I'm surprised that no one even brought up the large difference in riding position, especially the more laid back seat angle of the S40. These are quite different bikes to ride, and in choosing one I would think that consideration would be front and center. Certainly...

Bike cover (or light duty bag) for Q45

Couple of ideas: - The Q folds! Take the rear wheel off and it folds pretty small. (Lock the wheel to your light pole). This only works if you don't have fenders. - Get a chainguard ring to keep the teeth from tearing your bag. It's also friendlier when wheeling the bike amid people to not face...

    Q559 tire sizing question

Yes. This, exactly. (Also about the shock). You can probably get a QX100 (rigid) fork setup from Rose City Recumbents for pretty cheap, and the swap isn't hard. Yeah, less slop and wiggle. The bike feels much stiffer.

    I was humbled today

I was humbled this Friday afternoon, on my way home from work after a long week. I'd climbed a steep section, maybe 200ft rise, then was on a shallower uphill, going about 7-8 mph. I passed a kid, maybe 5, being dragged along by his mother. He looks at me and says "that's not very fast". Mom...
