My local Trek shop does all my work on both my S40 and V20. Sounds like recumbent prejudice might be at work at your shop.

I solved the recumbutt issue on my S40 by adding about 1" of military grade polyethene foam. I rode it in this year's Texas BikeMS150 (Houston-LaGrange-College Station) and had no problems whatsoever.

Pedal float is the degree of lateral movement (side to side) that the pedal allows during the pedal stroke.

I concur with the shorter crank length. I am also currently using 145 mm cranks purchased from bikesmithdesign.com.

That is helpful... I have a used V20 boom (2020) that I'm happy to send you free of charge since you're such a great guy, ;-) but you'd need to verify that it would fit your model/year S40. I believe in paying it forward...God has been very good to me.
