current gen q45 chain quick link

+1 on Silca Super Secret Waxing system. The boil bag makes it simple to wax a chain. I haven't used the new Silca chain prep, but I will be trying it soon. Also KMC's "Missing Link" chain connectors can be reused - If there's any doubt, it says so on the package. Unofficially, you can reuse...

current gen q45 chain quick link

Hi all, I'm looking to strip the factory grease for waxing and gather that it's necessary to install a new chain quick release link whenever removing and reinstalling a chain. I can see that my recently acquired stock q45 is an 11 speed, so I'm assuming that the chain is a normal 11 speed...

How to make your Vendetta as fast as possible

Air intake = lungs exhaust = well, you know... fuel system = carbs increased horsepower = higher FTP suspension = 700c rims instead of 650b tires = Conti GP5000... TLR of course Regular maintenance = waxing the chain and cleaning the brake pads. Weight removal = use CF instead of aluminum...

What crank arms/ should I use?

Hi Mathew, I did finally reduce my front chainring from 50t to 46t, so I have the same setup as you on my V20. I have not been able to get the derailleur micro-adjusted to work properly with the new setup. The worst problem is when shifting from the 12th gear to the 11th, it won't go in...

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

Regular WD-40, or the bike lube they now make? My 11-speed chains have never shown much wear. I've heard somewhere that they do wear out, but without showing the typical wear of the chains for fewer gears. I support you in these KOM efforts! I hope you can make them all unbeatable! :) Were you...

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

I hear ya John. I stay off cross chaining as much as possible on all of my bikes, but especially the V20. I am all for getting as much mileage out of my gear as possible to save money and the hassle of changing them out. I checked the chain stretch with a chain tool and it is only at .5, not .7...

    working with the chain

Just bought a BBB Chainchecker BTL125 today and measured my 12-speed KMC chain with about 12,000km. 0.75 which shows I should replace the chain soon. I wasn't as meticulous as I could have been about wiping the chain down after every ride, and even sometimes went around 500km without...

What crank arms/ should I use?

Thanks for the tips. That's saves me the frustration of finding both too short while in the middle of a build. I'm curious, what method did you use to add the extra links? Quick links or did you buy new pins or did you reuse the old pins? I'm unfamiliar with SRAM products. When looking for...

What crank arms/ should I use?

You may need extra chain. On my V20c with SRAM Eagle 10-52 with 46 tooth chainring and standard chainstay, the 126 link chain was just enough. But when I had on a larger chainring, I had to add a few links. So I made three chains from four and cycled through them, fresh waxing in between. Also...

    San Diego or bust

I used to be incredibly meticulous with my 2 road bikes and last car. Now I am older and in a position to be comfortable with replacing the chain once a year and cassette about every 2 years. The where and when I ride conditions are great for WD40 and the simplicity is great to just spray on and...

    San Diego or bust

I believe that, overall, waxing the chain not only makes for more carefree riding, but it likely decreases the time I have to spend on maintaining the bike/clothes overall (a lot less cleaning.. and.. nasty black grease does tend to get on lots of things). Anecdotally, my waxed chains last...

    San Diego or bust

Ditto here. And if you really get into it, you'll have more than one chain and a small chain-waxing-only crock pot. I ride and maintain four bikes, two 11-speed road bikes, and two 12-speed mtn. bikes. Unfortunately, none of them share the same chain length, so I have 12 chains total--three...

Chain Popping off Front Chain Rings

Just started yesterday and much worse today. I do not have a Front Derailleur, long story but I only ride on the big ring anyway. Normally on 5th cassette ring so pretty much a straight pull from chain ring to cassette. Yesterday while I was riding, probably pushing pretty hard, shifted a...

    Chain Plates Breaking ????

Chain waxing is the best - I would say it easily doubles or triples the life of the chain. I rode a total of 34,000 miles last year on 2 chains - swapping them out every week. I use Molten Speed wax = the key is cleaning the chain out of the box.

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

when you wax a chain it needs to be scrupulously clean. The wax does not flake at all. See the video series above . Wax sticks coats metal. If it’s hot you wipe clean. Sparkles. Ooh shiny.

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

...if you notice the ufo coating flakes off as you ride? I have to say wax flaking off the chain is the only annoying issue I have with waxing chain. It's especially annoying when I bike indoor on the trainer. I have to make sure they don't get on the carpet, or my wife will be really mad...

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

I agree with you Benphyr. Dry chains have very little chance for dirt to do any damage. On a microscopic level dirt could get inside, but since it is dry it will fall out more quickly than if the inside had any kind of wet lube in it. As you wrote, I am very meticulous with wiping down the chain...

My Very First Recumbent is a V20

Cleaner is always better. Beware: experience and opinion below. Read at your own risk. There is a huge thread on Chain Waxing. Dirt mixed with lubricant is a grinding paste. Waxed chains have been known to last a very long time when cleaned like meticulously such as @Frito Bandito does. The...

That's probably what I will do when the chain is back in stock someplace. I am waxing my chains as well.

Belt drive on a thru-axle Cruzbike

I waxed the chain on my previous Q. It must be re-done when it rains. This is not a solution for what I am pursuing. zerofrictioncycling.com.au has supplies and information about waxing. You are welcome to continue using a chain if you like, I don't mind. I am interested in putting a belt...
