The Low Down on Carbon Bike Tech.

This expert shares his broad knowledge about carbon bicycle frame repair, carbon composite airframes, carbon building, carbon grades, corrosion and more! He's Australian, so there's a bit of an accent for Anglo ears. By the way, he rides the carbon bikes he built for himself.

    SRAM brifters, rear D, etc...

On the Vendetta, its SRAM Force brifters mate very well with the long-cage SRAM GX 2.1 rear der. Shifting is smooth and crisp. The 10-speed gear cluster is a Shimano 11-36 that was on sale: It is kind of heavy, but has a reputation for not breaking. To finish the installation of the SRAM GX 2.1...

You young pups and your "clip-ins." Growing up using leather straps and toe clips, I think that my "Power Straps" are the bees knees.

    Slow Ride

This morning's ride turned out to be my slowest ride in years, but there's a reason for that: While we were finishing our morning coffee on the front porch, we watched a Bachetta Aero and a Giant pass the house, so I changed, pumped up the tires, centred the brakes, loaded water bottles, zeroed...

New Drivetrain for the Trusty Old Sofrider V1

The new chainrings fit; new cassette fits; new chain fits. Adjusted the front derailleur to fit the chain and new rings and it works smoothly. Adjusted the rear derailleur to fit the new cassette and it works well. The bike shifts better than it has for years... I'm pleased. Note: The freehub...

    Sofrider V2 cassette

I just finished installing a new 10-speed cassette on my Sofrider V1 and it both fits and works just fine.

    Sensor(y) overload!

As this antisocial comment was made during a social ride, I'd say that the person who made that antisocial comment needed to, "get in the back!"

New Drivetrain for the Trusty Old Sofrider V1

Why? Well, the other day while cleaning the chain, I noticed it was a little bit too loose on the big ring, so I measured it. It's borderline trash. Worn to the brink of worn out ( + 1/8" in a measured foot). History: The bike came with an 8-speed granny-gear cassette, a long-cage derailleur...

The late, great Sheldon Brown has a lot of information, good information, on bicycles in general. Here's an introduction to understanding how your drivetrain works: It's the same on recumbents like ours. http://sheldonbrown.com/gears.html While you're on Mr. Brown's site, poke around and have fun!

Farther, Faster, Fitter, Fun - (4F - The unofficial Cruzbike training team and support group)

Yes, I also do this. Bikes with suspensions tend to wander out of true more frequently than the unsuspended Vendetta does. When the fully suspended Sofrider is on trainer duty, the rear brake hand lever gets bungee-corded to the handlebar: The rear brake helps to slow down the Sofrider's...

    Impromptu Search and Destroy

After having just finished a few chores, Cindy mentioned that she saw a few recumbent bikes pass by. ! There was my reason, my excuse to go for a ride. YEEhaw! The tires topped up and a bottle of cool water on board, I set off to search the local flat roads for my prey. Dang, I thought...

    Climbing and Sprinting technical talk

Everyone is different, though: different torso/leg length ratio, arm length... on and on and on. Like me, for example. I'm so incredibly different, with the shorter right leg, weird non-stock knee angles, and stuff. The brain goes without saying, so don't say it. The adjustable-on-the-fly seat...

    Climbing and Sprinting technical talk

Yes, totally true. True as in, fact of life and/or written in stone. On my modded Sofrider, the ultra-reclined seat was built about an inch closer to the pedals than the less-reclined seat. This 'measurement' was arrived at via cut-and- try and exactly meets my personal requirements. This was...

How to precisely adjust boom position

A little dot of fingernail polish might work. It's a theory. Just a theory: I wouldn't know....

    Sensor(y) overload!

There are lots of threads that share the bad and the ugly. This one is more good than bad, isn't it? Like the time I wanted to see exactly how far the shop bike could go on five gallons of gas: It was a 500cc 4-stroke single that we had retrofitted with a big translucent plastic five-gallon...

How to precisely adjust boom position

Use one of your old steel ball bearings to burnish golf ball like divots into both the leading and trailing edges of the tape. Shhh: Do not tell anyone. -Or I KEEL yoo.

How to precisely adjust boom position

Only cheapskates use electrical tape, masking tape, and Scotch tape. Pros who value their lives use reflective tape. (I'm a cheapskate.)

    better climber?

I must agree with Mr. Youngblood here, regarding the Silvio's climbing prowess. My old Sofrider is much heavier than any Silvio and it was never outclimbed by any other rear-wheel drive recumbent bicycle: Ever. The Vendetta is in a class of it's own.
