I don't know if a lower bottom bracket helps for balance. A more upright seat position would help for sure. I mesure 5'9'' only and ride with a 100mm chainstay extension, and 150mm cranks. I couldn't try my new short cranks on the road, but when riding on rollers they feel ok.

I experienced, crashes happen when droping off to the side of the rollers.

For winter training I'm riding my Silvio 2 on Tacx Galaxia rollers. To avoid dropping off the 1 foot wide rollers I installed a mirror in front of the bike. In the beginning it took some time to get used to it, now into the second winter I'm quite confortable with my set-up
