    Cruztrike

Hi Jim, Actually the team has been chatting about this quite a bit lately. Several of our designs would lend themselves to a performance trike conversion, even a tilting design if we could come up with something light and effective. We have several major initiatives to complete in the short...

    Crank arm bolt torque?

Hi Trev, See here: http://www.cncexpo.com/MetricBoltTorque.aspx Use specs for 8.8 - 8mm bolt; you can lube it or not as you like (I like a bit of light oil on a properly-torqued bolt). Note these numbers are in inch-lbs. Cheers, Doug

bolts that attach the front-wheel brackets

Unfortunately, those have to be carbon steel bolts. Stainless isn't really strong enough over the long haul. They would have to be pretty rusted in order to be compromised on strength. Anyone who's tried to disassemble an old British roadster knows what I mean... :D

    New tires on 559?

The 559-25 HS348 *should* fit if the website dimensional data is accurate. The rolling radius calculates out to 310.4mm based on their referenced circumference of 1950mm. Sorry the original tires are giving you trouble; I've had good luck with Primo Racers and Comets over the years. Marathons...

IGH and Quest 559 don't mix, is that right(?)

Hi Toby, I don't remember which parts you've replaced - is your derailleur hanger straight? John and I had a discussion about chain slippage a few nights back. If you run the b-tension screw all the way in, it increases the chain tension, but at the expense of "chain wrap" around the cassette...

    Cruzbike for touring?

Hi Sean, Three of our bikes are well-suited to loaded touring: Sofrider Quest Sigma All three use robust aluminum frames and have ample mounting points for racks. The Sofrider and Quest will accept MTB seatpost racks, and can carry underseat loads with a little ingenuity. David Byrne is...

elg, I've sent you a pm. Thanks, Doug

    Shorten my chain?

Lemme understand, the chain drops off the front chainring when you shift the rear derailleur up? Is this an 8 or 16sp? Best, Doug

    new 700c conversion

Hi Rod, Mavic makes 'em. http://www.speedgoat.com/Catalog.aspx/Browse?Prod=4181 You can also use road calipers (and short-pull levers) if you prefer. Good luck on your build. Best, Doug

    Problems shifting

Hi Dan, Perhaps there is a bit of "clickety-clickety" before it skips a gear? First, make sure the gear cable isn't binding where it passes through the pivot clamp. This can make the shifting adjustment seem to change as you ride. Also, sometimes shifting is improved if you run the...

    cassette onto a hub gearing?

The SRAM 3x9 hub is geared equivalently to a 54/42/26 crankset. You can tailor the range by the number of teeth on the chainring you select; stump-pulling lows and ridiculous highs are available. The middle range is dircet drive, the upper and lower ranges run through a planetary gearset in the...

    Seatpost help

Rod, I assume you have the fork turned around 180 degrees, this is required to get the brakes to line up. Also, you should be placing the wheel axle about mid-way in the axle slot in the triangle brackets, and then using the furthest-forward set of mounting holes that will work. A photo would...

    Cannondale super V 900 as a Cruzbike?

Hi, The seat height can actually work out pretty well on this frame, but the stem compatibility will probably be an issue. I think Jack (Defjack) has dealt with this before, but as I remember it was a challenge. Good luck, on whichever approach you take - we'll all be around to help. Best, Doug

    Douglas needs help emails

Hello everyone, My hardtailcruzer@yahoo.com mailbox has been hijacked. If you receive e-mails from hardtailcruzer@msn.com, these are not from me. This person is send mail to my contacts asking for money to replace a plane ticket. Also, I have lost access to all e-mail in that box, so if we...

John Tolhurst brings his Vendetta to White Oak…

Thanks for the reporting, Jim. I don't think anyone covers subjects with the combination of thoroughness and immediacy that you put together. This is a great week for me, John is coming up to Richmond to spend a couple of days with me in the shop, and then we go to Lumberton for more testing...

    Conversion kit: Two questions!

Hi Alex, Absolutely beautiful. Based on side view comparisons between your V2K and mine, you might be able to bring the seat base forward one by one more hole set - this might get you the reach you're looking for without replacing the bars. You could then adjust the seat post to restore...

Learning to ride my new Sofrider

The quick release should be tight enough that it bites into the metal of the dropout when fully-tightened. The quick release arm should be "somewhat difficult" to close - this is about 20lbs of force to close the quick release lever. If the wheel is not secure when the quick release is...
