My Q45 mods for distance touring

Definitely a distance touring rig. Mounted a Blackburn front rack as a rear pannier rack and put two panniers on it. Zero recumbutt. Had to remain cognizant of my position on the seat. In the middle of my ride, I had slid down such that I was effectively laying on my back, staring at the sky and...

My Q45 mods for distance touring

I had posted my Q45 for sale, thinking that the S40 would be better for me. But then I decided to just go all the way with modifying it. The end result is pretty sweet. The Q45 is no speed machine, but for distance touring, it's perfect. Last year's GAP-C&O tour pointed out some areas for...

Turning the Back Bar around on My Q45

    1. Here is the shortened steerer with the Cane Creek Viscoset damper added to the top stack. I cut the steerer tube down by 4 in. 2. I cut a notch into the 4x4 post holder to allow the Thor seat to sit closer to the frame. 3. I cut a second 4x4 post holder with a similar notch to a fix to the...

Turning the Back Bar around on My Q45

So I've decided to take it a bit further. Going to use 2 4x4 brackets, one for each of the seat mounts that are on the mainframe. I'm going to cut the steerer tube down to allow for a lower mounting of the handlebars. I'm also replacing the shock with an aluminum bar that that is 25 mm x 25 mm...

Turning the Back Bar around on My Q45

After a lot of experimentation, I ended up using a post base for a 6x6 from my local hardware store as the the mount for my thor seat. Here is the finished setup. It works really well. I weigh 225, and I rode the setup for a 65 mi loaded ride. I am still using the angled seatpost.

Replace Q45 Shock with Metal Bar

Thank you. I have the 2019 Q45 with the quick release wheel rather than the thru axle wheels so I'm limited to HG spline cassettes. XDR free hubs aren't compatible. I've been running the stock 11-42t SRAM NX rear derailleur. In the recline position I need a lower gears to get that higher RPM, so...

Replace Q45 Shock with Metal Bar

I currently have thor seat on my Q45, with the base of the saddle mounted on the lower pegs. I swapped the seat post with a straight seatpost to give me a very reclined seating position. While the bike is very comfortable to ride, I've noticed that the riding position makes for very poor...

    Qs on seat for Q

Could you post some pictures of the connection points between your Thor seat and the frame of the Q45? I have been using the stock seat mount, and I feel they lift me off the frame. I would like for the Thor seat to rest on the frame directly. I'm thinking of fashioning something from either...

Took my Q45 on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Towpath tour

I had the same problem with the stock seat, which is why I switched to the Thor. I've played around with the seat angle so that I'm really resting on my lower back rather than my butt. This seems to be the best position for long rides. The reclined seat angle and the short crank arms do take...

Took my Q45 on the Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Towpath tour

I rode my modified 2019 Q45 on the GAP and C&O Towpath ride last week. Rented a pickup and drove to the Pittsburgh Airport, where I dropped it off. Then I rode from the airport back to Point State Park and back to DC. 375 miles over 6 days. My Q45 has the Thor fiberglass seat, 145mm cranks, 38t...

Brevet 200 km - Jura - Southern Poland. Question about riding in the rain.

I commute year-round. I prefer my Q45 in strong headwinds over my upright bike. The aerodynamic position makes for a better ride. But if headwinds are above 40 kph with temperatures below -9C. I will skip the ride. I ride with flat pedals, hiking boots, and regular raingear. It's bulky, but I...

    Upgrade to 12 speed

I'd like to know too. I've been unable to source an XD compatible hub that's a 135 QR. I've concluded that if I want to upgrade to the XD, I'll need to also upgrade the front triangle to a thru axle 142 width

    Chosen front hub

I don't think so. I tried removing the free hub, with no luck. Whenever it craps out, I'll have to build a new wheel.

    2024 Q45 creak

Thank you for the advice on the rear shock for the Q45. I tried a few air shocks that worked on my V2/K and qx100, but they all bottomed out on the q45. I ended up ordering a 190mm 1000lb shock from Amazon and it's solid! I'm 225. With the shock, there's no sway. I have the under the seat...

    Q45 Build photos

Is this for the 1 1/8 steer stopper or the 1 1/4? I'm trying to figure out it it goes over the fork tube, like a headset spacer, or over the spacer

    What’s Your Angle!? Why?

Thank you for the photo. This is very helpful. I had installed my seat with only one mounting bracket attached to the pegs that are closer to the rear wheel. The result is a comfortable, reclined angle. The trouble with this, is there is not enough weight on the front wheel causing it to slip...

Disadvantage of flat seats with the Q Series?

I saw that. I wasn't sure if the Thor seat design had changed to accommodate the Q45 brackets. It looks like I'll have to track down a qx100 bracket.

Disadvantage of flat seats with the Q Series?

Could you post some pictures of your Thor seat attached to your bike please? I ordered an easy seat from Thor. I'm also over 200lbs. Thanks in advance!
