$10,000 prize race for a cause-Emmitt Smith Grand Fondo

Where in the specified rules does it say recumbents not allowed?
it is called the

"Protocol for the Construction"
http://www.uci.ch/inside-uci/rules-and-regulations/equipment-165067/

If UCI road rules apply then the protocol follows. My guess they want the legal and liability coverage because of the prize money. Easier to follow the UCI stuff then make their own. Road rules also limit events to 200 riders if I recall correctly. The key phrase is "that apply" so it going to be some human's bias choices. strikes me as being in place for a easy justification of any future arbritary choices and decisions.

I'd be happy to be wrong

If I were interested, I would write to them and get an official ruling. They state that "UCI Road competition that apply will be enforced. To review UCI Road competition guidelines click here." When you click the link, it is only the Road rules, not the Design/Construction protocols (and I only briefly scanned the first 50 pages before staggering away blinking).

Further, they state "Road and Hybrid bikes are recommended". Hybrid is certainly outside of the UCI design spec. The word "recommended" gives me hope. They also state that they're limiting the field to 600 riders for the 100mi and 100k. That's the same as the Century I'll be riding next week...

I would appear that these are simply going to be used as a set of guidelines. IOW, it doesn't appear to be a sanctioned UCI event. Again, I'd get a ruling if I were interested.

I found the video on the "Protocol for the Construction" webpage to be quite interesting. I had no idea seat angle effected performance.

I would be cool if someone like "Jason" would just show up and ride the ride and slaughter everyone.
Even if they didn't let him register, the roads are public roads and they can't really stop you from riding on them.
Just let me take off, and about a minute later, just come up to them on the route - and of course blow by them and come through the finish about 15-20 ahead of the fast guys!
Oh - and make sure to drag a safety flag with you to show you have power to waste and still win! :0
Go Jason Go!

I got a place for you to stay and will drive you to the start line if anyone's interested. Of course if you win I expect to get a hefty tip!

I quickly scanned through the 171 pages of the "UCI Road Race" document that the web page referred to. (that was fun - NOT!)
From what I could tell there was no mention of bicycle types that were allowed or disallowed in this section (probably because it is covered in a different document way up front)
Also, the signup web-page for this event has no way to contact anyone for questions.
I did go to their FB page and typed an anonymous question about recumbents and someone replied back with the race directors email.
I emailed "Lauren" explaining that I ride a recumbent and asked would I be allow to ride in the event. The reply (to my surprise):
Hi Larry,
Yes, that is allowed.
Thanks,
Lauren

......
So, there it is - Boy this would really be fun to do, and I am in tip-top shape right now with nothing local to ride.
I was going to go after Michael Secrest's 3:46:16 Century record at the Northbrook Veledrome in 2 weeks but sadly found it is not available - but this would be much more fun!
I even have the time. But my biggest problem is funding right now, as I was laid off 7 weeks ago (and still not working) so don't really have the cash.
I'm going to research what it would cost to get there and back - and maybe send out an appeal to the "Tribe" to see if I can raise the funds.
Looks like I'd at least have a place to stay and a ride to the event thanks to Chris (So, are you going to enter Chris now that you know you can?)
... more later... :)

OK - Here's are my preliminary pricing results:

Cost to race in EmmitSmith's Grand Fondo on 9/17/2016
=======================================
$484 - Flight from Asheville to Dallas (9/16-9/18/2016)
$150 - Fee to ship bike round trip
$135 - Entry fee for Emmitt Smith (updated, entry fee more now for later registration)
====
$769 Total
...
So, thinking about starting a new thread to see what kind of interest there is in funding me for this - will get back to it after church... :)

Go Larry, go!
You could offer to reimburse your sponsors and add a little profit if you win, that would encourage bigger investments. Like say, double or nothing. You could also try to get CruzBike to sponsor you and then split the profits.

Larry, All in for transportation and housing support and a huge family cheer section but not about to embarrass the Tribe and enter. I have been riding 1/2 hour 3-4 days a week in a hotel on my trainer the last month, don't think that qualifies me for a run for the dough! Maybe next year.....
