100mm extension

I'm thinking I want to try a chainstay extension (no more than 100mm) on my Silvio 2.0...

Would anyone chime in on their experience?
Does anyone have one they aren't using (willing to sell)?

Blessings,

Is a "chainstay extension" a Cruzbike product?

I'm looking for a "chainstay reducer" ... One unfortunate aspect of my S40's design is that when you rotate the chainstay to a position for shorter legs the BB is at its highest point. The seat-to-BB height difference is certainly greater than I was hoping for. If I remember right, Cruzbike's marketing materials say the S40 works for folks down to 5'2". I'm 5'6.5" and feel like I'm brushing against the limts of a reasonable fit (and maybe beyond the limts).

Cheers,

-Jack

I believe it was, but from what I can glean, it only worked up to Silvio 3.0s with the Carbon Fiber Chainstays....
Would someone else please chime in if I'm wrong...

I'll chime in to confirm you're right! The chain stay extensions are for the earlier carbon chain stays that could disassemble and re-bolt with an extension.

However, I believe there are different size chain stays to address this challenge - whether you have the smallest available or if they will get you @velocio down to size I'm not sure. That would be a question for @Robert Holler. He'll probably need to talk to you and a measuring tape I'm thinking!

I will note that with the extension on my S30, I had to buy a second chain, and thus a new chain too so that it doesn't skip on the rear cogs. So you are in for a slight increase in maintenance expense. If you stay with the same brand of chain, and I recommend that, you can take 3 chains and do two replacements. So when you buy a new chain, buy 3 in case the manufacturer changes things and stops making the one you need.

Extensions were available in 100mm and 150mm lengths. I happen to have a custom 60mm and a 100mm in my parts box. Used the 100mm on my S1.o and the 60mm on my dual-suspension S30. I may also have a 30mm in the parts box too. I know, its a long story.....

DocS send me a PM with contact # and we can chat.

Good luck with a shorter chainstay Jack. Have you tried cutting the steer tube to its shortest length? I cut mine so there was only a single spacer and that helped.

I put a 100mm extension on my Silvio 1.0 and it helped, comfort wise, immensely.
I never felt I needed one on my first Cruzbike the Silvio 2.0 but then you may be taller than me.

I am 6'5" and I noticed back in November that you might have a chainstay extension for a S30 that you might part with. Is it still available?

Note: I got my 100mm extension direct from Cruzbike. Drop them a line if you can't find a used one that you want. As I recall the price was very reasonable and at that time, they said they had a few knocking around the warehouse.

Can someone kindly provide me with some insight as to how difficult it is to install a 100mm chainstay extension on the Silvio 2.1? I have been wanting to raise my legs higher but doing so currently with the stock setup severely crowds the cockpit. I'm guessing the steps are:

1) remove the wheel
2) loosen the BB clamp bolts
3) remove the chainstay assembly bolts from the Boom/BB assembly
4) remove/unslide the carbon chainstay assembly from the Boom/BB assembly
5) slide the new 100 mm extension on the carbon chainstay assembly & tighten the lower chainstay extension bolts
6) reattach/slide the carbon chainstay assembly to the boom/BB assembly
7) tighten the upper chainstay extension bolts to the boom/BB assembly
8) reinstall the wheel but leave the QR slightly loose
9) remeasure the slider and boom for proper fit
10) tighten the boom bolt
11) tighten the slider bolt
12) tighten the QR
13) tighten the BB clamp bolts (do not over tighten)
14) add additional links as needed to the chain
15) install a curved slider optional.

Have I missed anything here?

I'm a little concerned about chipping or cracking the carbon chainstay so I guess my main question is, "Does the carbon chainstay assembly come loose from the Boom/BB assembly fairly easily or do you need a rubber mallet to coax it off from the drive side?" And once off, is there a recommended lubricant to apply before attaching the new 100mm extension?

TIA

Item 13 is VERY important!!!!

Is 13 an unlucky number? It is if you overtighten those bolts.

On my Silvio the stays were a tight fit. Rubber mallet job.
No, if you forget to tighten the BB clamps and the BB moves around making the front derailleur work really hard to change gears!!!
From what I have been told!!!

Listen to the advice of the veterans. Loosen the bolts or you will squash the BB! Tighten the bolts or the BB will wander around! Confusing? At least in the latter case you do not have to replace the BB.
