If you cant recruit a world class athlete to the task, then cheat and make one using doping, thats what all the others do. If you wanna win, you gotta cheat, and thats that.
The problem with that is I'm not that interested in what can be done by doping!
We are in the HPVA record domain, not the UCI one. The record is 51 km in the hour, I have seen good riders who can do 40 km in 51 or 52 minutes on a time trial bike, which is a 46km/h average. Indoor track, better aerodynamics of the Silvio, and we could well be cooking. There is very little re-training needed for a road bike rider to perform on the Silvio, if I have correctly understood the mechanics of cycling and achieved the design objectives.
Records can be good and bad. Mochet he sat a record and his bike was banned. In 1997 here in Norway a recumbent set a new record on a 540 km ride. It was a full fairing recumbent he was 1 hour and 40 minutes faster then the first racer.
Next year no recumbents were allowed to enter that race! Other major races followed and wrote no recumbents allowed. There are still some races that recumbents can enter but all the major prestigious races are only for racers. The racers were intimidated by riders on recumbents that could out ride them. One of the real sad thing for the racers was they knew they were in better shape then the fastest recumbent racers but they still couldn’t beat them!
Don’t you feel a little sorry for the racers?
Some recumbent riders can also be intimidated by a Silvio because it looks like a racer has the same wheels as a racer and similar components. Because a Silvio is classified as recumbent it can’t start in major races. That is one reason active racers don’t buy them. I’m sure if racers were able to choose many would ride a Silvio in races. There are some racers that aren’t active in races that might choose one for health and speed benefits knowing they can’t compete with it.
Existing recumbent riders might choose to get a Silvio but many have found a model that they are familiar with and can be intimidated about trying something different. There are also other potential customers for Silvio riders that have never had a racer but want to exercise and be able to keep up with racers and blend in. That’s what makes Silvio different from all other recumbents it blends great with a racers!
A low racer doesn’t blend so well or a velomobil among racers?
There are of course some very strong riders among recumbent riders but most of them are just ordinary people that want a comfortable ride and get in better shape.
There are still many potential customers that have never heard about Silvio!
I hope some of them read this post.
You stand out when you ride a recumbent and if you ride a Silvio you stand out even more and you stand out in a good sense!
If Silvio sets a new record I hope it doesn’t have a negative effect as it did for Mochet.
