2016 Calvin's Challenge - who's going??

Larry is so fast he can fly through these races with his eyes closed!
Based on his training data and the stuff he did on the house at the same time, I'd say that he's gotta nap when he can.

Should be interesting to hear his race report; first effort on his new diet; he's down a bunch of weight and he's only "B" class event tapered. I will say though he really nailed it, right at 10TSB (training stress balance) which is just barely positive so he carried (by the data) no fatigue into the morning (fatigue would be a neg number), but also no rested reserve like you would for a class "A" target. Got my fingers crossed that the rubber side stays down and he gets a good assessment of his sustained power, by the numbers if he's feeling it today he won't fade; time to wait an see what happens in the real world. All this is speculation until tested.

Latest from Gary:

Any word on Don Appel? He is on a blue M5.
Last time I saw him was at about the 85 mile point, he was a few minutes behind the peloton pack, doing well, but he'd fallen off the back.

At 6 hours, Larry and Kevin were at 126 miles with almost a 4 minute lead.
Temp never came up, still 51 at 1:30pm.
Raining, nasty, terrible day for a bike ride.

At mile 134, Kevin flatted. Larry is in his own now, 5 minutes ahead of Ben at the 150 mile mark.
There is no longer a pack or peloton, totally broken up.

When Kevin flatted, he crashed. Rashed up his left hip Larry-style. Somewhere during the crash he ripped the wire out of the RD. Sadly his day is complete.

Mean while Larry still looking strong at 190 miles, nearly 6 minute lead.

Larry @ 207 miles stopping for a quick snack. It's lonely in the pits when you have that big lead.

Update on Don, according to his wife he miss a turn early on and lost a lot of time getting back on course.
No word on Joe and Ben yet but everyone should have been on the 7 mile loops which opened at 3 pm EDT

  1. The news on Kevin simply stinks. Hope his injuries are minor. Go Larry! It will be nice if we hear Joe and Ben are working together and coming home strong. Throw Don in there for good measure. What time does the race stop?

Update from the CB Facebook page; looks like Kevin could have gone on with the mechanical but got hypothermic in the cold rain while doing the repair and wisely called it a day. That tough but shows the intelligence we expect from our Tribe.

Mile updates:

Larry 221 miles, estimated 246/247 finish distance.
Ben 214 miles
Joe 193 miles

Major strong showing.

Apparently Larry only stopped because his chain dropped to the little ring and since he has no front derailleur it's a stop to shift

Looking at the video it looks like only 6 recumbents racing. Four Cruzbikes, 1 M5, and a Bacchetta?

38 minutes to go. Larry caught up to Ben on the loop and working together.
